Guerrero remains homer short of 40-40 season

MONTREAL (AP) -- Derrek Lee and the Florida Marlins got an unexpected boost.

    Derrek Lee

Lee went 3-for-3 and Ramon Castro homered as Florida took advantage of six Montreal errors to beat the Expos 10-2 Wednesday night.

"They kind of fell apart defensively tonight,'' Lee said.

Montreal's Vladimir Guerrero went 0-for-2 with two walks to remain one home run short of a 40 homer-40 steal season. Guerrero grounded into a double play in the first and flew to center in the seventh, swinging at the first pitch both times.

"We just didn't play baseball tonight in any phase of the game,'' Expos manager Frank Robinson said. "He's an aggressive hitter and he swings at the first thing he sees, not only in this situation but all year long. There's nothing new about him swinging at the first pitch.''

The errors tied a team record. Florida scored four times in the sixth and took advantage of three errors in the eighth to add four more runs.

"You have those days but you certainly don't like to have them at home, especially in front of the hometown crowd, but there's nothing you can do about it,'' Robinson said. "You just put it out of your mind and come back out there tomorrow and play a good ballgame.''

Lee's RBI single in the sixth chased Bartolo Colon (10-4) and gave the Marlins a 2-1 lead.

Eric Owens and Andy Fox hit run-scoring singles off left-hander Joey Eischen and pinch-hitter Brian Banks added an RBI grounder to make it 5-1.

Florida's Kevin Millar walked in the sixth to reach safely for the 40th consecutive game.

Montreal's Endy Chavez had three hits -- including an RBI double in the fifth off Josh Beckett (6-7) -- to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. Orlando Cabrera made it 5-2 with a run-scoring double off Gary Knotts in the sixth.

Beckett allowed six hits and one run in five innings in his final start of the season.

"It's been a frustrating year to go through all the ups and downs,'' Beckett said. "It's nice to end on a win.''

Castro homered off Tim Drew to start the eighth and the Marlins added three more unearned runs to increase their lead to seven as Montreal committed three errors in the inning.

Colon allowed five hits and four runs in five innings after getting his 20th win in his previous start to become just the second pitcher in major league history to win at least 10 games in each league in the same season.

    Game notes

Former Expo Tim Raines was given a warm ovation from the Olympic Stadium crowd of 7,416 when he pinch hit for Florida with one out in the eighth. He was hit by a pitch in the seventh and drew a walk off T.J. Tucker in the ninth. ... Tucker made two errors in the ninth.
