ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- This World Series is fit for the silver screen and the stars are the never-say-die Anaheim Angels.
They came out of nowhere.| Game 7 at a glance | |
HeroThe quiet assassin. Garret Anderson came through with the highlight moment -- a bases-clearing double off Livan Hernandez in the third inning that proved to be the last runs of the game -- lifting the Angels to their first-ever World Series title.Goat In the biggest of games, Hernandez came up real small. He struggled with his control early -- walking three in the first two innings -- and then got smacked around in the third inning, giving up three hits, the last being Anderson's three-run double.Key move Dusty Baker's decision to leave Hernandez in for as long as he did. Hernandez wasn't sharp from the outset and Baker perhaps should have had his bullpen ready to enter at any point once Hernandez ran into trouble. And that trouble was in the third inning. Someone from the pen should have been in the game before five straight batters reached base. By the time reliever Chad Zerbe entered the game, the Giants were in a three-run hole.Key stat In earning the victory, John Lackey became just the second rookie and first in 93 years (Babe Adams in 1909 for the Pirates) to start and win Game 7 of the World Series.Key stat II Hernandez suffered his second loss in this World Series (he was also tagged with the loss in Game 3), the only two defeats he's had in his career in the postseason. Entering the Series, he was 6-0 in eight previous playoff appearances. |
| Going to Disneyland! | |
| What will the Anaheim Angels do after
winning their first World Series? The team owned by The Walt Disney Co. is going to Disneyland, of
course. The Angels will parade down Main Street starting at 10 a.m.
Tuesday. They will be joined by Anaheim Mayor Tom Daly and Jackie
Autry, widow of singing cowboy Gene Autry, the team's former owner. The festivities will continue at 11 a.m. at the Arrowhead Pond
with the official Angels victory parade, which will make its way
through Anaheim to Edison Field for a fan appreciation party at
noon. The Angels will make another appearance later that afternoon at
Disney's California Adventure. Starting at 3 p.m., fans will be able to ask the players
questions and participate in special activities, culminating in a
concert and fireworks display at 7:30 p.m. -- The Associated Press |
Game notes
Goodwin's strikeout left Giants pinch-hitters at 0-for-16 in the postseason. ... The last rookie to start Game 7 in the Series was Jaret Wright of Cleveland in 1997. He got a no-decision in the Indians' 3-2 loss in 11 innings at Florida. ... Salmon stayed in the game after being hit, but did not look great in grounding out his next time up.
