CHICAGO (AP) -- Matt Clement isn't used to winning games with his bat.

Clement hit a tie-breaking two-run double as the Chicago Cubs scored three runs in the fourth inning and beat the Florida Marlins 6-3 Monday night.

I don't know, I usually don't know what to say when you ask me about hitting," Clement said. "Hitting isn't usually my best asset."

Chicago was without center fielder Corey Patterson, who went on the 15-day disabled list before the game with a torn ligament in his left knee. He is expected to miss the rest of the season.

But Tom Goodwin, playing in place of Patterson, went 3-for-4 with a walk, a run scored and two stolen bases.

"It's a big loss," Alex Gonzalez said. "Corey Patterson is hard to replace, but hats off to Tom Goodwin coming in and doing what he did. That's what we need, we need guys to step up like that."

With two outs in the fourth and Hee Seop Choi on second, Marlins manager Jack McKeon had starter Josh Beckett (3-4) intentionally walk Paul Bako to get to Clement. The Chicago right-hander, who improved to 5-1 in eight career starts against his former team, hit the first pitch down the right-field line to score Choi and Bako, putting the Cubs ahead 5-3.

"You expect Sammy Sosa to do that to you, not Matt Clement," said Beckett. "I threw him a changeup next at-bat. We had a little chuckle at each other."

Clement came into the game hitting .240.

"I just went up there and settled for the first-pitch fastball that I could make contact on," Clement said. "There wasn't much of a thought process, I was just trying to hit it hard."

Clement scored on Ramon Martinez's single later in the inning to complete the scoring.

Clement (6-7) allowed three runs on five hits in 6 1-3 innings, striking out six and walking two.

Three relievers finished without allowing a hit -- Joe Borowski pitched the ninth for his 17th save in 20 chances.

Florida went ahead on Ivan Rodriguez's solo homer in the first, his 12th of the season. After Sosa's double-play ball scored Goodwin in the bottom of the inning, the Marlins answered with Derrek Lee's solo shot and Miguel Cabrera's run-scoring single in the second.

The Cubs quickly tied it in their half of the second on Gonzalez's two-run homer, his 11th.

Beckett pitched six innings and gave up six runs on 10 hits. He struck out six and walked four.

"These guys got me runs early and I kept giving runs back. I kept letting them back in it," he said.

Clement retired 12 of the 14 batters he faced between the third and sixth innings. ^Notes: Indianapolis 500 champ Gil de Ferran sang during the seventh-inning stretch. ... Sosa made a diving catch in right on Rodriguez's line drive in the eighth. ... Gonzalez made a diving catch at shortstop, on Lee's line drive in the fourth.
