SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Oliver Perez came within three outs of his
first complete game, holding Los Angeles to one run over eight-plus
innings as the San Diego Padres beat the Dodgers 7-1 Monday night.
Perez (3-3) matched a season high with eight strikeouts,
allowing five hits and four walks in his 26th career start. He lost
the shutout when All-Star Paul Lo Duca led off the ninth with a
homer. Scott Linebrink finished for the Padres.The Dodgers' only previous scoring threat was in the fifth
inning after a two-out triple by Wilkin Ruan and a walk to
pinch-hitter Chad Hermansen. But Perez struck out Cesar Izturis to
end the inning.Perez, 21, who was sent down to the minors on May 1, is 2-0 with
a 2.25 ERA in five starts since being recalled from Triple-A
Portland on June 13.San Diego scored five runs off Andy Ashby (2-5) in the fourth
inning. Ryan Klesko hit a leadoff homer, and the first six batters
had hits.Klesko's 19th homer came on the first pitch against Ashby. Sean
Burroughs followed with a single and scored on Rondell White's
check-swing triple down the right-field line that carried into the
Dodgers' bullpen in the corner.Brian Buchanan, Ramon Vazquez and Miguel Ojeda followed with
singles, with Buchanan and Ojeda driving in runs to make it 4-0.
Perez made the first out of the inning on a grounder, but it
brought another run home.Ashby lasted four innings, giving up five runs on eight hits
with one strikeout.Ojeda and Mark Loretta added RBI singles off Steve Colyer in the
sixth inning to put the Padres ahead 7-0.
Perez's longest previous outing was 7 1-3 scoreless
innings. ... Ashby is 0-4 against San Diego, his former team.
