TORONTO (AP) -- New York's bullpen is so thin Mariano Rivera had to pitch two innings, including the ninth with a sprained right ankle.
Andy Pettitte won his sixth straight start and Jason Giambi hit his 24th homer run as the Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-5 on Friday night.Yankee reliever Dan Miceli left the game in the eighth after being hit on his right leg. Rivera took over and got the last six outs for his 16th save in 18 chances.Rivera said he twisted his ankle when he fielded a groundout at the end of the eighth."I'm fine," said Rivera, who thought he'd be available to pitch Saturday. He said he didn't mind pitching two innings."That's my job," Rivera said. "You got to do what you got to do."Catcher Jorge Posada said Rivera wasn't throwing as hard in the ninth because he wasn't pushing off as much.Yankees manager Joe Torre didn't seem too worried about Rivera or Miceli."If it was anything beyond a little sprain Mariano wouldn't have been able to go out and do what he did in the ninth," said Torre, who believes they need some more arms in the bullpen."It's one the area where we could use some help. There's no question. We have limited experience down there."Torre said the return of Antonio Osuna would help. Osuna, who had a strained groin, will rejoin the team on Saturday.Yankees right fielder Raul Mondesi injured himself in his return to the starting lineup, a day after he angrily complained about playing time.Mondesi hurt his left wrist while swinging in his last at-bat. He had the wrist iced and he's expected to see a doctor.Toronto reliever Scott Service walked Mondesi with the bases loaded in the seventh, scoring the go-ahead run.Enrique Wilson followed with an RBI single, and Giambi's homer off Service in the eighth gave New York an 8-5 lead. The first-place Yankees remained two games ahead of the Boston Red Sox.The fading Blue Jays have lost four in a row and 11 of 13, including the first four of 12 straight games against the Red Sox and Yankees -- the two teams ahead of them in the AL East. The Blue Jays are nine games behind New York and seven behind Boston."When we were winning I don't think we had a starting pitcher knocked out early," Toronto manager Carlos Tosca said. "When we were hitting home runs, we usually had guys on base. That's baseball."Pettitte (11-6) hasn't lost June 8.Staked to a 5-1 lead in the second, Pettitte allowed five runs on nine hits, while striking our five and walking three in seven innings."He struggled," Torre said.Toronto reliever Trever Miller (1-1) gave up consecutive singles to Bernie Williams and Hideki Matsui before walking Posada to load the bases. Service struck out pinch-hitter Ruben Sierra for the first out, but Mondesi worked the count to 3-2 before drawing the walk.Shannon Stewart and Chris Woodward homered for the Blue Jays.Toronto starter John Wasdin lasted just one inning plus five batters in his first start in the majors since Sept. 28, 2000. Wasdin, acquired from Pittsburgh on Tuesday, allowed five runs on eight hits."I wanted to make an impression," Wasdin said. "I know I can pitch better than my line showed tonight."Matsui hit an RBI double in the first, but Stewart led off the bottom half with a homer. The Yankees scored four runs in the second on Alfonso Soriano's RBI double, Jeter's two-run single and Giambi's RBI double.Woodward hit an RBI double in the second, Carlos Delgado hit a run-scoring single in the third and Woodward homered in the fourth, cutting New York's lead to 5-4.Stewart tied it with an RBI single in the sixth.Game notes
Yankees manager Joe Torre said Thursday that Karim Garcia would start in right field until the All-Star break, but he changed his mind Friday and started Mondesi. After learning he wouldn't start on Thursday, Mondesi protested to reporters that he couldn't get out of his slump if he wasn't playing. Mondesi, who entered the game in a 2-for-29 slump, went 1-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. ... Giambi, the first baseman, robbed Tom Wilson of a hit with a leaping grab of a liner in the seventh. ... Delgado leads the majors with 95 RBI.
