Coors Field, Denver, Colorado
DENVER (AP) -- Todd Helton hit his third homer in two games and drove in two runs, and Preston Wilson homered and stole a potential tying home run from David Ross as the Colorado Rockies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 Saturday night.
Colorado has won four straight and eight of 12 to tie Los Angeles for third in the NL West.Jolbert Cabrera had two homers for Los Angeles which lost for the 12th time in 16 games.Colorado took an early 4-0 lead, but Los Angeles cut it in half on homers by Alex Cora and Cabrera. The Dodgers nearly tied it in the seventh, but Wilson reached over the wall in center to pull back what would have been a two-run homer by Ross.Wilson got a series of high-fives from his teammates and received a standing ovation from the crowd as he made his way to the dugout.Wilson hit a solo homer in the eighth inning, his 23rd, and drove in the game's first run with a double in the first to become just the 10th player in league history to reach 90 RBI before the All-Star break.Toronto's Carlos Delgado, who leads the majors with 95, became the ninth last week.Helton is 16-for-33 with six homers and 13 RBI during a nine-game hitting streak, which started one game after a 17-game hitting streak ended. The All-Star first baseman has 123 hits, one shy of Dante Bichette's team record for most before the All-Star break, and became the second Rockies player to reach 700 RBI.Rockies starter Jason Jennings (9-6) was coming off one of his worst starts of the year, but didn't show any lingering effects. He breezed through the first four innings, allowing just one baserunner -- on an error by third baseman Mark Bellhorn -- and let only two balls get out of the infield.Adrian Beltre had the Dodgers' first hit on a soft liner to right to put runners on first and second with one out in the fifth, but Jennings got Ross to pop out and struck out pitcher Andy Ashby.Cora gave Los Angeles its first run in the sixth inning with his first homer of the year, and Cabrera made it 5-3 in the seventh.Jennings, who gave up six runs in 5 2-3 innings Monday against Arizona, allowed two runs and five hits in 6 2-3 innings. Last year's NL Rookie of the Year is 6-1 over his last eight starts and 6-0 at Coors Field this season.Justin Speier gave up Cabrera's sixth homer in the ninth before finishing for his fifth save.Helton put Colorado up 2-0 in the third with a solo homer that curled just inside the foul pole in right. It was his 20th of the year and sixth in the past three games against the Dodgers.Ronnie Belliard made it 3-0 in the fifth on a double that went over Cabrera's head after he charged the ball. Helton followed with a run-scoring single to right on a 1-2 count.Ashby (2-6), making his 300th appearance in the majors, allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out six in five innings.Game notes
Bichette (826) and Larry Walker (800) are the only other Rockies with more than 700 RBI. ... Dodgers RHP Paul Quantrill made his 664th career appearance, tying Ferguson Jenkins for most by a Canadian pitcher. ... Bellhorn and Jay Payton each stole second base, giving the Rockies 10 in July after they had just four in all of June. ... Reliever Guillermo Mota pitched a perfect sixth to run his scoreless streak to 17 innings, the longest by a Dodgers pitcher this year.
