LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) -- Jose Acevedo, vying for a spot in the
Cincinnati rotation, pitched four solid innings in the Reds' 11-6
exhibition victory over Detroit on Wednesday night.
Jason LaRue, Jacob Cruz and
Adam Dunn homered for the Reds.
Acevedo (2-0), making his fifth appearance and start of the
spring, allowed one run on two hits with four walks and five
strikeouts, leaving the game with a 6-1 lead.
Meanwhile, Esteban Yan, one of three battling for the No. 5 spot
in the Tigers' rotation, did little to help his chances. Yan (2-1)
gave up six runs on five hits -- including successive homers in the
first -- and five walks in 2 2-3 innings.
Ryan Freel started the Reds' four-run first with a walk, moved
up on a passed ball and stolen base -- both off backup catcher
Brandon Inge.
Austin Kearns followed with an RBI single then scored
on LaRue's second homer of the spring. Cruz followed with a solo
homer, his second.
Cruz had an RBI grounder and
Juan Castro an RBI single, both off
Yan, as the Reds made it 6-1 in the third.
Shane Loux relieved Yan and gave up five runs on five hits,
including Dunn's two-run homer in the sixth, his third, giving the
Reds an 11-1 lead.
Fernando Vina walked in the Detroit first and scored from first
on
Rondell White's double.
Andres Torres and
Eric Munson each had RBI doubles off Brandon
Claussen as Detroit pulled to 11-5 with a four-run sixth.
Jason Smith hit Detroit's fifth double, driving in a run in the
ninth.
^Notes@: The Tigers sent right-hander Ariel Prieto back to their
minor league camp Wednesday. Prieto, who signed as a minor league
free agent in November, had given up nine runs on 11 hits and six
walks in 8 2-3 innings of exhibition work. ... Inge, who has been
used at several infield positions after losing his Detroit catching
job to
Ivan Rodriguez, started behind the plate in this game. But
the rust showed. Inge let several balls get away from him,
including two that were charged as passed balls allowing runners to
move up. In both cases, the runners eventually scored. ... The Reds
threw out Detroit runners at the plate in the first and third
innings.
