SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) -- David Wells felt good enough to go an extra inning.

Making his second appearance of the spring, the 40-year-old left-hander gave up three runs and six hits Monday night in the San Diego Padres' 8-3 victory over the Texas Rangers.

Coming off back surgery, Wells was scheduled to go five innings. But he went back out for the sixth and threw a total of 76 pitches.

"My pitch count was low so they asked me if I wanted to go one more and I said, `Sure," Wells said. "I knock on wood every day and count my blessings that I'm getting another chance to pitch. I just want to go out there healthy, have a solid season and a winning season."

Brian Giles hit a two-run homer for the Padres. Sean Burroughs and Gene Kingsale had three hits apiece.

Former Yankees teammate Alfonso Soriano doubled to deep center off Wells, and Hank Blalock hit his sixth homer of the spring.

"Texas has always had great hitters. I've watched Alfonso for a long time now and it's just incredible what he can do," Wells said.

"I'll admit it, I don't throw as hard as I used to, but I can still bring it. Hank Blalock stood back and smacked everything I threw at him. They both have great futures."

Rangers manager Buck Showalter was impressed with Wells, too.

"If he stays healthy, he will be a great addition," Showalter said.

Joaquin Arias, 19, who joined the Rangers last week to complete the Alex Rodriguez for Soriano trade, made his debut at shortstop in the ninth inning without handling a play.
