PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- These were the same old Braves to Kevin
Millwood (4-3) allowed six runs in four innings, falling to 0-5
with an 8.65 ERA in five starts against his former team since
coming to the Phillies before last season.
"He's probably trying to do too good, probably not relaxing and
he's probably pressing," Andruw Jones said of Millwood.
"It's just like facing any other team," Millwood said.
Wright (3-5) gave up one run and six hits in 7 1-3 innings, his
longest outing of the season. A former rookie sensation with
Cleveland who was only 21 when he started Game 7 of the 1997 World
Series against Florida, Wright lost his shutout bid when Chipper
Jones and shortstop Rafael Furcal allowed Chase Utley's one-out
pop-up in the eighth inning to land for an RBI single.
"It's been a long time since I had three pitches working,"
Wright said. "I felt pretty good."
The Braves have won four of five, improving to .500 (23-23) for
the first time since they were 13-13 on May 5. The 12-time division
champions entered in fourth place, the latest they've been this low
in the NL East standings since May 1990.
Phillies manager Larry Bowa's 20-year-old daughter, Victoria,
was in good condition after being involved in a car accident
outside the stadium complex before the game. Bowa went to the
hospital with his daughter, but returned in time for the game.
"It was tough to concentrate," Bowa said. "You look at the
car and wonder how she walked away. It was completely totaled. I
guess she's lucky she's alive. The X-rays were negative, but she
has whiplash and a slight concussion. She was released, but we have
to keep an eye on her."
Andruw Jones gave the Braves a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning,
hitting an 0-1 pitch over the right-field wall for his 11th homer.
The opposite-field drive followed walks to Chipper Jones and Johnny
"I didn't hit the ball that good, but I'll take those," Andruw
Jones said. "Sometimes you hit the ball hard right at people."
Millwood issued a career-high six walks in his shortest outing
this season. Millwood was traded to the Phillies for Estrada in a
cost-cutting move by the Braves in December 2002. He had won his
last four decisions after starting 0-2.
"I haven't really done a whole lot to help this team lately,"
Wright, who had lost his last four starts, struck out six and
Atlanta took a 2-0 lead on RBI singles by J.D. Drew and Estrada
in the first inning. The Braves left the bases loaded in the first
and second innings, before Jones connected in the fourth.
Drew again was booed each time he came to the plate by
Philadelphia fans, who haven't forgotten that he spurned a
lucrative offer from the Phillies after he was selected with the
No. 2 overall pick in the 1997 amateur draft, re-entered the draft
and signed with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Utley extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single
in the sixth inning. He has 17 RBI in just 58 at-bats. ... Jones'
slam was the first at the new Citizens Bank Park and the second of
his career. His first came in 1997 against Boston's Steve Avery,
also a former Braves pitcher. He tied Javy Lopez for fourth place
on Atlanta's all-time hits list with 1,148. ... Millwood's ERA has
risen from 3.55 to 4.90 over his last three starts.
