Pitcher doubles twice vs. Phillies

MONTREAL (AP) -- Livan Hernandez found a unique way to prepare for his latest start -- he played two rounds of golf.

Hernandez doubled twice and got his first win in five weeks, leading the Montreal Expos to a 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night.

"I ran a little bit out of gas in the seventh inning, but I feel a little tired," Hernandez said. "I played some golf yesterday, 36 holes. I wanted to do something different because when there's no work, you've got to do something else. I woke up at 5 o'clock in the morning, played 36 holes and came back at 10 o'clock last night."

Hernandez was disappointed he shot 84 twice. But his pitching was much better than his putting.

Brad Wilkerson, who fell a triple short of his second cycle in two seasons, and Brian Schneider had three hits apiece for Montreal, which won its third in a row after a seven-game losing streak.

"We had some big hits all night, and Livo pitched a great game," said Wilkerson, who joined manager Frank Robinson, hitting coach Tom McCraw and right-hander T.J. Tucker for Hernandez's second round of golf Monday in a charity tournament.

Hernandez (4-7), who hadn't won since May 16, doubled in the third and added an RBI double in the sixth to drive in the Expos' fifth run.

"I love to hit," he said.

Hernandez allowed four hits and two runs in seven innings to win for the first time in seven starts, ending his five-game losing streak.

Five of the combined six hits by Wilkerson and Schneider were for extra bases.

Wilkerson, who hit for the cycle against Pittsburgh last June 24, hit Montreal's first leadoff homer of the season. He also singled in the third, doubled in the fifth, walked in the sixth and flied out to center to end the eighth.

"Well, you've got it in the back of your mind, don't get me wrong, I knew I needed a triple, but you know, you just let it happen," Wilkerson said. "You go up there and try to hit the ball hard, and if it happens, it happens."

Schneider homered and doubled twice.

Philadelphia's Bobby Abreu was ejected by plate umpire Gary Darling as he walked away after throwing down his bat after taking a called third strike from left-hander Joe Horgan for the first out of the eighth.

Abreu threw his helmet to the ground, and manager Larry Bowa came out to argue with Darling, the crew chief, but to no avail.

"I believe it's the first time in the three years that I've been here that I've seen him lose his cool," Phillies center fielder Ricky Ledee said. "It was clearly a ball, but that's part of the game."

Chad Cordero pitched the ninth for his second straight save and third in four opportunities.

"You're not going to win too many games with two runs and four hits," Bowa said.

Pat Burrell drew the Phillies even at 1 with his 12th homer in the second.

Schneider restored Montreal's one-run lead in the bottom half when he led off with his eighth homer off Brett Myers (5-4).

Hernandez doubled and advanced to third on Wilkerson's single before scoring on Endy Chavez's double-play grounder to put the Expos up 3-1.

Wilkerson doubled in the fifth for his third straight hit. He advanced to third on Chavez's sacrifice and scored on Jose Vidro's RBI single as Montreal increased its lead to 4-1.

Ledee's bases-loaded RBI grounder with one out in the sixth drew the Phillies to 4-2 in the sixth. Hernandez struck out Burrell on his 99th pitch with runners at second and third to escape further damage.

Myers pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up eight hits and five runs.

The Phillies have 24 homers in their last 14 games. ... Hernandez has gone at least seven innings in 12 of 16 starts. ... Montreal LF Terrmel Sledge started in place of Carl Everett, who was removed from the lineup after batting practice. Sledge went 0-for-3 with a walk. Everett, who has been on the disabled list twice this season, missed Sunday's 4-2 win over the Chicago White Sox because of a strained left hamstring. He is day-to-day. ... Hernandez showed off a framed 2003 Masters flag signed by tournament champion Mike Weir that he bought in a silent auction for the charity tournament.
