MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A trip to Milwaukee was just what the struggling Philadelphia Phillies needed.
Having lost nine of 10 at home, including the final seven straight, the Phillies righted themselves on the road and swept the Milwaukee Brewers in a weekend series. They capped off their first sweep in Milwaukee with a wild 9-6 victory in 10 innings over the Brewers on Sunday."We bounced back and played hard this weekend," Phillies manager Larry Bowa said. "When you're playing on the road, you expect to get booed. But with the way we played at home recently, we should have gotten booed."The Phillies' earned their latest victory with a five-run 10th inning. The outburst was highlighted by Jason Michaels' RBI single that broke a 4-4 tie and Chase Utley's pinch-hit single that drove in two runs.Jim Thome started the winning rally with a leadoff walk, and David Bell followed with a single. With the infield drawn in expecting a sacrifice bunt, Michaels bounced a single to center field to score Thome.Utley singled in Michaels and Lou Collier, who had walked. Jimmy Rollins followed with a double to drive in Doug Glanville, who reached on a fielder's choice. Placido Polanco drove in the fifth run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.Bowa said he had called for a sacrifice bunt from both Michaels and Collier, but changed the sign after several pitches."We had some good hitting in that inning," Bowa said. "And we ended up needing a lot of them to get the win."Felix Rodriquez (5-6), the fourth Phillies pitcher, pitched one inning for the victory. Tim Worrell relieved Roberto Hernandez in the bottom half of the 10th and got the final out for his 16th save in 22 chances.Randy Wolf started for the Phillies on his 28th birthday and gave up four runs and four hits in six innings.Dan Kolb (0-3) took the loss for the Brewers. Gary Bennett hit a home run and drove in three runs for Milwaukee, which lost its season-high fifth straight.Victor Santos pitched 6 2-3 innings and struck out six for the Brewers. He has struggled since the All-Star break, going 2-5 in eight starts. After the game, Phillies reliever Todd Jones accused Brewers shortstop Bill Hall of stealing signs from second base in the eighth inning. Jones yelled at Hall several times during the inning. Jones said Hall looked at second base to signal to hitter Ben Grieve that a fastball was coming, and glanced at third base to indicate a breaking ball."I can't stand that," Jones said. "If you steal signs and I find out, I am going to make you pay for it."Hall denied the accusation."He was changing signs on every pitch," he said. "How smart does he think I am? I was more worried about getting a stolen base from him."Brewers manager Ned Yost had more things to worry about than stealing signs. His team continued to struggle as they lost for the 17th time in 22 games. His bullpen was ineffective on Sunday."They didn't have a very good day," he said. "They've been throwing a lot lately."Added Kolb: "Things just aren't going our way right now. The better teams turn it around and we're not turning it around."The Brewers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Following a walk to Wes Helms and a single by Chris Magruder, Trent Durrington drove in Helms with a single for his third RBI of the season. The Phillies came back to take a 3-1 lead in the third inning. Following Todd Pratt's single, Glanville hit his second home run of the year and first since April 18.Rollins, who reached on an error by Helms and stole second, scored on a two-out single by Thome. Bennett's two-run home run in the fourth inning tied it at 3. It was Bennett's second home run of the season and first since April 9.The Phillies broke the tie in the seventh. After a two-out walk to Bobby Abreu and a single by Thome, Bell drove in Abreu with a ground rule double. Bennett's sacrifice fly in the seventh drove in Durrington, who led off with a triple.Magruder added a two-run single in the 10th inning.<. ^Notes:@ After holding a closed door team meeting following Saturday night's lose, Yost shook up his lineup by sitting regulars Geoff Jenkins, Lyle Overbay and Craig Counsell. Magruder, Helms and Durrington started in their place. ... Helms' third inning error was his 14th of the season, tying him for the team lead with Hall, even though he has played 24 fewer games. ... With Sunday's attendance of 32,411, the Brewers have drawn 1,702,253 in 64 home games. In 2003, the Brewers only drew 1,700,345.Copyright by STATS LLC and The Associated Press
