ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Pedro Martinez was awful at the end of the regular season. He was an ace Wednesday night.Martinez pitched seven effective innings, Manny Ramirez drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly, and the wild-card Boston Red Sox beat Anaheim 8-3 for a commanding 2-0 lead in the AL division series.

The Boston bullpen. After taking over for Pedro Martinez to start the bottom of the eighth, the threesome of Mike Timlin, Mike Myers and Keith Foulke pitched two shutout innings, retiring six of the seven batters they faced.
Colon allowed 38 homers this season -- second-most in the AL. ... Martinez lost twice to the Yankees and twice to Tampa Bay to finish the season, with a 7.72 ERA in those starts. He is 9-1 with a 2.12 ERA lifetime against the Angels in the regular season. ... Scioscia decided the Angels would fly to Boston on Thursday rather than after Wednesday night's game.
