O's Cummings breaks right ring finger

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- Alex Gonzalez and Toby Hall hit consecutive homers off Sidney Ponson in the third inning to lead the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to a 12-0 rout of the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday.

Ponson, making his third spring start, allowed 11 hits and seven runs in four innings.

"I left the ball up in the zone a lot today," Ponson said. "It happens. As long as it happens in spring training and not on April 4.

Alex Sanchez, released by Detroit last week, had three of the Devil Rays' 20 hits, and Mark Hendrickson pitched five innings of two-hit ball as four Tampa Bay pitchers combined on a four-hitter.

"I mentioned early in the spring that I've seen improvement with our pitchers," Tampa Bay manager Lou Piniella said. "Well, it's now, and when the season starts, we have to follow through."

Seth McClung tossed two hitless innings, Jorge Sosa worked the eighth and Jesus Colome worked out of a two-on jam in the ninth inning.

Luis Ordaz also homered for Tampa Bay. ^Notes:@ Orioles OF Larry Bigbie was scratched with a neck strain. ... Baltimore OF Midre Cummings broke his right ring finger when he ran into the left-field wall.
