TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Joe Borchard hit his fifth homer of spring training and helped the Chicago White Sox beat the Oakland Athletics 12-8 Monday, ending a four-game losing skid.

Jon Garland gave up a single and a home run to the first two batters he faced in his first start since being hit on the right biceps by a grounder Wednesday. He allowed five runs and nine hits in six innings.

"His sinker was not working. It was flat," Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen said. "He battled but he didn't have one of his best pitches working for him."

Dan Haren, being counted on to fill one of the spots in Oakland's rotation vacated by Tim Hudson and Mark Mulder, allowed seven runs and nine hits over 5 2-3 innings.

Borchard homered off Huston Street in the eighth inning, a two-run shot.

Notes:@ White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle will make his first start since injuring his foot last week shagging fly balls on Tuesday against Colorado.
