PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) -- Denny Bautista pitched five strong innings and the Kansas City Royals beat the San Diego Padres 4-2 Monday.

Bautista allowed one run and three hits to bolster his chance of being the Royals' fifth starter.

Mike Sweeney hit a two-run home run off Tim Stauffer in the first inning, and the Royals had three extra-base hits in the second, including an RBI double by Mark Teahen and a run-scoring triple by Alberto Castillo.

Stauffer gave up four runs and six hits in four innings. Xavier Nady went 2-for-4 with a sixth-inning homer for the Padres.
