Fielder smacks first major-league home run

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The Milwaukee Brewers hope they got a good glimpse of their future from Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks.

The two rookies both hit their first career home runs Saturday night, leading the Brewers to a 7-6 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

"It was big night for both of those kids," Milwaukee manager Ned Yost said. "As much as those kids have been through together, for both of them to hit their first home run on the same night is kind of unbelievable."

AL Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana (7-4) led 5-2 before Carlos Lee's two-run double in the fifth.

Wes Helms walked leading off the seventh, Chris Magruder singled and Jesse Crain relieved. After J.J. Hardy sacrificed, Fielder batted for pitcher Matt Wise (1-2).

The 21-year-old son of former major league star Cecil Fielder hit Crain's next pitch 426 feet to left-center field to give the Brewers a 7-5 lead. Fielder said he was looking for a fastball from Twins reliever Jesse Crain.

"I was just trying to hit a line drive up the middle and it kept going," said Fielder, who hit 15 home runs at Triple-A Nashville before being called up June 13. "It was a great feeling, especially in that situation, with as loud as the crowd was."

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said the Twins were not planning to throw Fielder a fastball.

"That was our bad," he said. "We made too good of a pitch to him and he creamed it. I barely turned my head and the ball was gone."

Yost said the win, the Brewers' fourth in a row, was even more special because they were able to beat Santana, who ended a streak of 16 straight road wins. He had not lost in 18 road starts since Kansas City beat him 5-2 on May 24 last year.

"Any time you go against Santana, it is tough," Yost said. "You give up three runs in the first inning and it's like giving up six runs against a normal pitcher. To do what we did tonight, shows that our offense is finally coming around."

Santana gave up only one run in the first four innings, but struggled in the fifth and sixth innings as he gave up four runs.

"It was a tough night," he said. "We got a great start and I wasn't able to hold that lead. I felt like I threw good pitches, but it's part of the game."

Torii Hunter homered twice for the Twins but hit an inning-ending flyout in the seventh with two on.

Wise pitched a scoreless sixth, Ricky Bottalico gave up one run in the seventh, Julio Santana pitched a scoreless eighth and Derrick Turnbow got three outs for his 14th save in 16 chances.

Minnesota took a 3-0 lead in the first. Shannon Stewart hit Tomo Ohka's second pitch of the game into the Brewers' bullpen for his 100th career homer. Justin Morneau doubled two outs later and scored on Hunter's homer.

Weeks, called up three days before Fielder, hit his first career home run in the bottom half.

"I challenged him to hit one after I hit mine," Weeks said. "That we could both do it on the same night and also win the game makes it very special."

After Hunter's 14th homer made it 4-1 in the fourth, Weeks hit his first career triple in the fourth and scored on Bill Hall's grounder. Glenn Williams doubled in the fifth inning and came home on Ohka's wild pitch to stretch Minnesota's lead to 5-2.

Luis Rivas scored on Joe Mauer's grounder in the seventh.

The Brewers placed 3B Jeff Cirillo on the 15-day DL after he broke his left hand on Friday when he was hit by pitch. He was replaced on the roster by INF Trent Durrington. ... Brewers first-round pick 3B Ryan Braun, who signed this week, worked out with the team before the game. ... Glenn Williams' fifth-inning double extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
