KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) -- Kyle Davies took another step toward breaking through the logjam of the Atlanta Braves starting rotation with an 11-7 win Saturday over the New York Mets.

Davies pitched three shutout innings, allowing two hits.

The Braves scored six runs in the first inning, capped off by a grand slam by first baseman candidate James Jurries. He is is batting .500 this spring and trying to unseat first baseman Adam LaRoche.

The Braves scored four more in the third to take a 10-0 lead.

Jurries and Matt Diaz each had two hits for the Braves, and Lastings Milledge and Juan Tejada had three hits each for the Mets.

Davies spent the first half of the 2005 season in Richmond and expected to be there at least until September call-ups before he got the call to Atlanta in late June when injuries hit the club.

He spent last spring as a nervous rookie hoping for a shot at Triple A ball. This season, he is one of six pitchers fighting for one of the five spots in the Braves rotation.

"Last year I didn't bring any major league experience," Davies said. "This year, I have experience. I know what I am capable of doing and want a shot. I am relaxed and want my chance."

Davies, who has a 95 mph fastball and a solid breaking ball, is competing with Jorge Sosa and Horacio Ramirez for the two final spots in the Braves rotation behind Tim Hudson, John Smoltz, and John Thomson.

Davies struggled toward the end of the season, but said he's been working on his conditioning to get ready for this season.

"I can't look ahead in my position," Davies said. "I can't pressure myself. I want to be with these guys, though, because we all grew up together."

^BRAVES NOTES: Second-baseman Brian Giles made a first-inning error with a bad throw to first. He later apologized to Davies. On the next play, Giles made an excellent stop to get Carlos Gomez at first. ...Chuck James is scheduled to start for the Braves on Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals at Walt Disney World. He'll be followed by Lance Cormier, Joey Devine, and Dean White. ... Cox said Andruw Jones will start in center field Sunday. His Netherlands team was eliminated from the World Baseball Classic. ... Pete Orr, Chris Reitsma, and Scott Thorman are also expected back after the elimination of Team Canada.
