PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) -- Seattle starter Gil Meche tossed three hitless innings in San Diego's 9-7 victory over the Mariners on Friday.

Meche struck out three and walked one. He strained a left oblique muscle on Feb. 28 and didn't make his first spring start until Monday but he has allowed only two baserunners and struck out six in his first two scoreless outings.

"I'm consistent with the five pitches I throw and doing what I want to do," Meche said.

Meche's outing extended the Seattle starters' scoreless-inning streak to 15.

"It's fun for me right now, but I need to be careful not to overthrow," Meche said.

San Diego starter Woody Williams isn't having fun. He allowed 10 hits and five earned runs -- including Carl Everett's first home run for Seattle -- in five innings. Williams has allowed 27 hits and 14 earned runs in 17 innings this month. His spring ERA is 7.41.

Geoff Blum hit a three-run homer in the eighth and Justin Leone belted a grand slam in the ninth for San Diego.

Game notes
Kevin Appier, trying a comeback with the Mariners at age 38, relieved Meche but left the game in the fifth inning when he strained his right calf muscle covering first base on a ground ball. Seattle manager Mike Hargrove said the injury "does not look good. We'll have to wait and see the severity." Appier allowed three hits and two earned runs in 1 1-3 innings, after two scoreless outings. ... Leone's game-winning grand slam off recently signed Sean Green was his 10th hit in 25 spring at-bats (.400). Leone has two home runs and 10 RBI in 13 games. ... The Mariners optioned outfielder T. J. Bohn to Triple-A Tacoma.
