The Diamondbacks needed a starting pitcher after they traded
left-hander Brad Halsey to the Oakland Athletics for Juan Cruz.Jarvis pitched four scoreless innings and gave up two hits. He
didn't walk a batter and struck out three. The Diamondbacks had
sent him to their minor-league camp on March 19 after he had begun
spring training with the big club.The Diamondbacks scored twice in the first inning against Cubs
starter Jae Kuk Ryu, who is battling for a roster spot. Orlando
Hudson doubled with one out and took third base on a wild pitch by
Ryu.Chad Tracy followed with a sacrifice fly. Luis Gonzalez doubled
and then scored on a single by Conor Jackson.Ryu pitched three innings, giving up five hits and two runs. He
didn't walk a batter. He struck out three.The Diamondbacks got a solo homer in the fifth inning from
Hudson off Cubs reliever Michael Wuertz.
Cubs reliever Scott Williamson left the game after hitting
Jackson with a pitch in the fifth inning. The Cubs said Williamson
has a mild strain of the lower back. Jackson was the only batter
Williamson faced. ... The Cubs optioned outfield prospect Felix Pie
to Class AAA Iowa on Sunday and returned pitchers Les Walrond and
Randy Wells to minor-league camp. Pie was 10-for-35 this spring.
... Cruz is 14-24 lifetime with a 4.36 ERA. In addition to Oakland,
he has spent time with Atlanta and the Cubs, for whom he made his
big-league debut in 2001. Halsey was 8-12 with the Diamondbacks
last year with a 4.61 ERA in 28 games, 26 starts.
