PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) -- Adrian Beltre spent the World Baseball
Classic hitting home runs for the Dominican Republic. Now he's
ready to do the same for Seattle.
The third baseman hit a solo shot Tuesday in his first at-bat
for the Mariners this month, and fellow regulars
Raul Ibanez and
Richie Sexson also connected in a 5-4 win over the Arizona
Diamondbacks. Umpires stopped the game in the top of the eighth
inning because of rain.
The home runs overcame a sluggish start from newly acquired
Jarrod Washburn. He allowed six hits and three runs in five innings
through the wind and rain. Washburn gave up
Luis Gonzalez's two-run
homer in the first and
Jerry Gil's solo homer in the fifth.
The Diamondbacks also got a home run from Carlos Quentin in the
seventh off Luis E. Gonzalez.
"The wind was really a factor, and only Beltre and Sexson were
legitimate," Seattle manager Mike Hargrove said. "It was a day to
keep the ball on the ground."
Beltre hit four home runs during the WBC. He has changed his
batting stance slightly, standing with his hips and shoulder more
closed toward home plate. His stance was directed more at the
pitcher last season, when he slumped from a .334 average with 48
home runs in 2004 as a Los Angeles Dodger to .255 with 19 home runs
as a Mariner.
Ibanez's home run was his team-leading fourth of the spring. He
signed an $11 million, two-year extension two weeks ago. Sexson is
batting .520 with three home runs in 12 spring games.
Game notes
Mariners right fielder Ichiro Suzuki, fresh off leading
Japan to the WBC championship, is due in camp on Thursday ... The
Diamondbacks' Gonzalez, 38, is batting .333 (11-for-33 in 13 spring
games) after hitting his third home run. "I felt good, and just
trying to get some quality at-bats," Gonzalez said. "We only have
a week left down here and with the ball flying out of here, looks
like guys are starting to get into the groove." ... The Mariners
optioned left-hander Bobby Livingston to Triple-A Tacoma. Catchers
Jeff Clement and Rob Johnson, plus infielders Asdrubal Cabrera,
Todd Sears and Matt Tuiasosopo, were reassigned to minor league
camp.
