KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) -- Kyle Davies bolstered his bid to make Atlanta's opening day roster by pitching five shutout innings against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday.

Jorge Sosa, also trying to wrap up a spot in the Braves' rotation, was less successful. He yielded four runs, including a three-run homer by Ryan Howard. The game ended in a 4-4 tie after 10 innings.

"I feel good about the results I have had, but I will be ready no matter where I end up," said Davies, who lowered his spring ERA to 0.64. He allowed four hits, two walks and struck out one.

In his time with the Braves last season, Davies went 7-6 with a 4.93 ERA in 14 starts.

"I am trying to turn heads, but if you try too hard, it works against you," he said.

Sosa's three-inning performance was his first for the Braves this spring. He pitched six innings for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, allowing only one run.

Atlanta manager Bobby Cox said he has confidence in Sosa.

"He's pitching as well as anyone we have this spring. He's throwing harder than he did when we got him last spring," Cox said.

Sosa went 13-3 with a 2.55 ERA in 20 starts and 24 relief appearances for the Braves last season after coming over from Tampa Bay in a trade at the end of spring training.

The Braves jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Andruw Jones homered off starter Ryan Franklin. Jeff Francoeur connected in the fifth against Franklin.

The Phillies scored four in the sixth off Sosa, taking the lead on Howard's drive. It was Howard's ninth homer of the spring, matching a team record.

The Braves tied it in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Matt Diaz followed by an RBI single from Cesar Crespo.
