TORONTO (AP) -- Gustavo Chacin and Vernon Wells might be benefiting the most from Toronto's new-look offense.
Wells doubled home the go-ahead run in four-run seventh inning, backing Chacin and leading the Blue Jays over the Baltimore Orioles 7-3 Tuesday night.Chacin (4-0), who has won each of his starts this season, allowed three runs and six hits in seven innings. He lowered his ERA from 5.60 to 5.11."I know we got a good offense this year. I just want to give us a chance to win," said Chacin, whose team has scored 31 runs in his starts.Toronto is among the AL leaders with a .310 team average.Wells enjoys hitting in front of Troy Glaus, acquired from Arizona. Wells is batting .387 and is 8-for-20 with two home runs and seven RBI in his last five games."This is a fun lineup to be a part of. Top to bottom, any guy can start a rally at any time," Wells said. "It's fun just knowing there is no deficit we can't overcome. When you have a guy like Gus on the mound, throwing the way he does, you know we are just an inning away from scoring runs, and tonight we did that"Rodrigo Lopez (1-2) gave up four runs, five hits and four walks in six innings, throwing 107 pitches. He has allowed at least four runs in each of his five starts."His location has got to get better, that's all. He's got to get his pitch count down," Baltimore manager Sam Perlozzo said. The Orioles have lost three straight after winning nine of 12Baltimore, which has scored just five runs in its last three games, tied the score 3-3 in the seventh on a two-run homer by Jay Gibbons, who is 9-for-17 (.529) against Chacin. While Gibbons loves to face him, Melvin Mora doesn't."I don't want to face Chacin any more. I'm 0-for-12 against this guy," Mora said.Lopez walked Russ Adams leading off the bottom half, and Jim Brower relieved and walked Frank Catalanotto with one out. Wells doubled for a 4-3 lead, Glaus was intentionally walked, John Halama came in and pinch-hitter Shea Hillenbrand hit a two-run single. Bengie Molina added a two-out RBI single.Lyle Overbay hit an RBI double in the first for Toronto, but Miguel Tejada tied the score in the fourth with his fifth homer. The Blue Jays went ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth when Overbay hit an RBI single and scored on Molina's double.Game notes
Tejada was selected the AL player of the week Monday after batting .536 with three homers and 10 RBI. He led the league with 24 total bases during that span. ... Baltimore manager Sam Perlozzo says he's heard the team is close to signing to 3B Melvin Mora to a contract extension. ... 2B Brian Roberts returned to the Orioles lineup after missing one game with a left hip flexor.
