SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Scott Olsen pitched the best game of his young career.

Olsen (5-3) gave up two hits and a run in seven innings to help the Florida Marlins beat the San Diego Padres 2-1 on Saturday night.

"That's probably the best outing I've ever had," said the 22-year-old rookie left-hander Olsen. "I was worried a lot in the bullpen. My ball wasn't quite right. It's two different worlds --the bullpen and the game."

He struck out eight and walked one. Joe Borowski came on in ninth to pick up his eighth save in nine opportunities.

Olsen said his slider was his go-to pitch. "It was breaking the way I wanted it to break," said Olsen. "Six or seven of my strikeouts were on sliders."

With the game tied 1-1, pinch-hitter Henry Ramirez drew a leadoff walk in the eighth inning from Clay Hensley (4-5) and was sacrificed to second by Alfredo Amezaga. One out later, Mike Jacobs greeted reliever Alan Embree with a single to left that plated Ramirez.

"It was a first-pitch fastball," said Jacobs." He ran it in on me. It's one of those situations that a lot of times they start you with a break ball lefty-on-lefty. Sometimes you guess right. I was able to do that tonight."

Hensley settled down after giving up two hits in the first inning. He didn't allow another hit over his final 6 2-3 innings. He walked four and struck out one.

"It was frustrating," said Hensley. "It was just one of those days that it didn't go our way. I was just happy that I was executing a lot of the pitches. I was happy I got my fastball back."

Hensley got out of a bases-loaded no-out jam in the top of the seventh.

The Marlins loaded the bases on a walk to Miguel Cabrera and back-to-back bunts by Cody Ross and Jeremy Hermida. After getting the first out on a force at home, Hensley got catcher Matt Treanor to hit into a double play with Barfield's throw just beating Treanor at first.

The Marlins took a 1-0 lead in the first after Amezaga led off the game with a double. He moved to third on Dan Uggla's bunt single and scored on Jacobs' double play groundout.

The Padres tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth inning. Cameron led off with a triple just over the glove of a leaping third baseman Miguel Cabrera. Cameron scored when Olsen threw a wild pitch to Brian Giles.

"We didn't play well, we didn't execute," said Padres manager Bruce Bochy. "We needed to move some runners, but we're able to do it. We battled there and we're close, but just came up short."

Game notes

Adrian Gonzalez' 17-game hitting streak came to an end as the Padres first baseman went 0-for-3. It appeared that Gonzalez would get a chance to extend the streak in the ninth, but he was walked intentionally. ... Olsen is 4-1 on the road and 1-2 at home. His strikeout total was one off his career high set May 13th at Pittsburgh.
