Corcoran propels D-Rays past deflated Braves

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Tim Corcoran got a beer shower from his Tampa Bay teammates.

"And it was cold," a smiling Corcoran said of the postgame celebration.

His manager will now give him the opportunity to stay in the Devil Rays' rotation.

Corcoran threw solid five innings in his first start of the season and Rocco Baldelli had a run-scoring triple as the Devil Rays beat the Atlanta Braves 3-2 on Saturday night.

Corcoran (1-0) gave up one run and four hits for his first major league-win, coming in his second career start.

"That's a childhood dream come true," Corcoran said. "I just figured I'd make pitches and stay right there on the mound. Try to speed it up. I didn't want to take a whole lot of time in between pitches."

Corcoran was inserted into the rotation after the Devil Rays optioned Seth McClung to Triple-A on Tuesday, a move designed to convert the right-hander from a starter to a closer.

"Just a very good game intensity by everybody," Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. "You've got to tip your hat to Corky going five right there. He went through his thing very nicely. A combination of good sink on his fastball and a real nice curveball. He was very composed."

McClung threw two perfect innings, including two strikeouts, in his first outing with Durham on Saturday.

Baldelli's RBI triple made it 3-1 in the sixth, helping the Devil Rays improve to 9-2 in interleague play this season.

Chad Harville pitched the final 1 2-3 innings for his second career save. His previous save came on Sept. 24, 2003 while with Oakland.

Matt Diaz got the Braves within 3-2 on a pinch-hit RBI double in the seventh. He is 7-for-19, and has five RBI as a pinch-hitter this year.

Lance Cormier (2-3) made his second start this season for the Braves, allowing three runs and 11 hits in 5 2-3 innings. Atlanta, which snapped a 10-game losing streak Friday, has lost 21 of 25.

"They are upbeat," Braves manager Bobby Cox said. "That's the good thing about this team. They come to win."

The Braves have played a major league-high 31 one-run games, going 11-20 in those contests.

"It's been hard," Cormier said. "I know it's been a prolonged thing for the whole month of June. We've just got to keep plugging. We'll be on top of those games and then everything is going to turn. It's got to turn."

Tampa Bay loaded the bases with no outs in the first, but scored only once when Jorge Cantu hit into a double play. The Braves tied it at 1 on Adam LaRoche's RBI double one inning later.

Aubrey Huff put the Devil Rays ahead 2-1 in the fifth with a sacrifice fly.

Tampa Bay has had 10 hits or more in 11 of the past 15 games. The Devil Rays left 11 runners on base through six innings and 12 overall.

Atlanta's Chipper Jones stopped an 0-for-14 slide with a single in the sixth. He also singled in the eighth and finished 2-for-3 with a walk.
