TORONTO (AP) -- The Philadelphia Phillies could use a day off
after finishing one of their worst road trips in recent memory.
Ryan Howard and
Chase Utley homered, and
Bobby Abreu had four
RBI to help the Phillies end Toronto's five-game winning streak
with an 11-6 victory on Sunday afternoon.
Howard hit his 28th homer for the Phillies, who went 2-7 on an
awful road trip that saw pitcher
Brett Myers arrested for domestic
violence.
"We had a lot going on," manager Charlie Manuel. "A day off
might help."
The Phillies have Monday off before beginning a six-game
homestand.
They went 37-44 through the first 81 games of the season
Asked to describe the first half, Manuel said "it was very
inconsistent. Any time you have a losing record it's disappointing.
Surprised? I'd say probably."
Utley and Abreu each went 3-for-5 for the Phillies, who have won
just five of their last 22 games.
Geoff Geary (5-0) pitched 3 1/3 innings for the victory.
"I've been in the right place at the right time," Geary said.
"The five wins that I have it wasn't like I did some miraculous."
Reed Johnson had three hits for the Blue Jays, who were trying
for second straight sweep.
Toronto starter
A.J. Burnett (1-2), who was solid in his first
two starts since being activated from the disabled list, struggled
against Philadelphia -- allowing seven runs and 10 hits in 4 1/3
innings.
"We had a chance at a sweep and the starter sets the tone and
it wasn't done today," Burnett said. "I didn't have control all
game. I've got things to work on."
Toronto's
Bengie Molina and
Lyle Overbay had RBI singles in the
first, but Utley tied it in the second with a two-run single.
Toronto's
Frank Catalanotto hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom
half, but Howard tied it again in the third with his solo shot off
Burnett.
Abreu's two-run double gave Philadelphia a 5-3 lead in the
fourth.
John McDonald's RBI bunt single scored
Eric Hinske cut it to 5-4
in the fourth before the Phillies scored two runs in the fifth on
Chris Cote's RBI double and
Jimmy Rollins' run-scoring single.
Hinske tripled and scored on Reed Johnson's RBI single in the
sixth to make it 7-5.
But Abreu's two-run single in the seventh and
Pat Burrell's RBI
single made it 10-5 in the seventh.
Utley hit his 16th homer, a solo shot off
Scott Downs in the
ninth.
Game notes
Philadelphia C Sal Fasano left in the fourth with
inflammation in his left knee. He's day-to-day. ... LF David Dellucci left in the seventh with a strained left shoulder. He's
day-to-day. ... Toronto CF Vernon Wells missed his second straight
game with a strained hamstring. Manager John Gibbons said Wells
might play Monday in front of family in Texas. ... The Blue Jays

Marcum from Syracuse.
