SEATTLE (AP) -- Jered Weaver is used to being misidentified as his brother even if he looked nothing like his sibling on the mound.

Weaver In each of his first five major-league games, Jered Weaver has started, earned a win, lasted at least six innings and allowed no more than two runs. The last pitcher who started his big-league career with such a streak was Don Schwall, who did it for the Red Sox in 1961. "Don't worry," Jered said after being referred to as Jeff, "I get that a lot."

Weaver continued his impressive rookie season with a dominating performance, limiting Seattle to one run in seven innings as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Mariners 7-1 on Monday night.

Weaver shook off the emotional tug of replacing his brother in the Los Angeles rotation and improved to 5-0 by outpitching fellow young standout Felix Hernandez.

Weaver was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on June 30 to take the roster spot of his brother, who was designated for assignment after struggling to a 3-10 record in 16 starts for the Angels this season.

Before Monday's game Jered Weaver talked with his brother, who planned on watching the game on television.

"Obviously, he's proud of me for getting back up here, but it's not the kind of circumstances we imagined it was going to happen in," Weaver said. "But we know this is a very business-oriented game and things like that happen.

"It's a little saddening for me ... but, like I said, he's not going to have a problem finding somebody else to go to."

Kendry Morales hit a two-run homer to back Weaver, who is 11-1 this season between Salt Lake and the Angels, his only loss coming on April 13 against Las Vegas.

Weaver scattered five hits and struck out a career-high nine. He eclipsed 100 pitches for the first time this season with the Angels, throwing 73 of his 111 for strikes.

"When he got a lead he knew what to do. He put pitches in good zones and made them step up to try and beat him, and we were able to hold it tonight," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He's got great mound presence out there and pitched a terrific game."

Orlando Cabrera of the Angels singled to left in the eighth to extend his streak of reaching base safely to 60 games. Cabrera has reached safely in 75 of 79 games.

Hernandez (8-8) was nearly Weaver's equal, but lost for the second time in his last seven starts. His one mistake came in the fifth, when Morales hit an 0-1 fastball an estimated 407 feet into the seats in right. Juan Rivera walked with one out and scored on the homer.

"The home run ball was a good pitch," said Hernandez, who struck out six in his 6 2/3 innings. "You can't control more than that. I got the pitch where I wanted it."

Rivera scored the Angels' first run in the third when Chone Figgins singled to right with two outs and Rivera beat Ichiro Suzuki's throw home after the All-Star outfielder double-clutched.

Rivera scored again in the seventh when Adam Kennedy knocked out Hernandez, slicing a two-out, two-run single just inside the left-field line. The bottom third of the Angels batting order -- Rivera, Morales and Kennedy -- went 4-for-8 with five runs scored against Hernandez

The bottom trio scored two more runs in the ninth when Figgins hit a two-run single off reliever Emiliano Fruto, scoring Morales and Kennedy.

Morales tied a career-high with three hits.

"We've talked about trying to create some depth in our lineup and tonight you saw it," Scioscia said. "It's going to take more than looking in the middle of our lineup. We need depth."

Seattle got to Weaver in the fifth when Kenji Johjima singled with one out, and one out later, Yuniesky Betancourt walked on a 3-2 pitch.

Suzuki then lined the first pitch from Weaver to center and Johjima beat Figgins' throw to the plate.

Jose Lopez led off the sixth with a sharp single to left and Raul Ibanez then drove a shot deep to left-center that Weaver thought was gone, but the ball didn't carry and Figgins caught it on the warning track.

"He looked like his brother, Jeff," Lopez said of Weaver. "The first time you see him, you don't feel comfortable."

Game notes

The Angels broke a five-game losing streak to Seattle. ... Seattle starter Joel Pineiro made his first relief appearance since April 26, 2002, against the Yankees, getting the final out of the ninth. Manger Mike Hargrove said before the game that Monday was Pineiro's scheduled day to throw on the side and he may be used out of the bullpen instead. Pineiro started last Saturday against Colorado. It was Pineiro's first relief appearance after 128 starts. ... Seattle CF Shin-Soo Choo, called up to take Jeremy Reed's roster spot, doubled in the third for his second major league hit.
