DENVER (AP) -- Colorado Rockies manager Clint Hurdle made a small move in hopes of generating some offense. Flip-flopping Brad Hawpe and Yorvit Torrealba in the batting order paid immediate dividends.

Jamey Carroll singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th, one inning after Torrealba had tied the game with a two-out, two-run homer off Trevor Hoffman, and the Rockies beat the San Diego Padres 9-8 on Thursday night.

"I had liked the way Yorvit had been swinging the bat," Hurdle said of the catcher he moved to No. 6 in the lineup. "More importantly, I liked the way he found ways to drive in runs."

With two outs in the ninth, Todd Helton singled and Torrealba hit a first-pitch fastball to left to tie the game.

"I was looking fastball all the way against the best closer in the game," Torrealba said. "I wasn't going to take a pitch and hope to see another fastball."

Torrealba had three hits and three RBI and Clint Barmes had two hits and an RBI for Colorado, which won for the fourth time in 17 games. Brian Fuentes (3-3) worked two scoreless innings for the win.

"I definitely didn't want to give up a two-run homer there," Hoffman said. "You know that if a ball gets elevated here it has a chance to go out."

It was Hoffman's fourth blown save in 31 chances.

In the 10th, Choo Freeman doubled off the wall in left with one out off Scott Williamson (2-4). On a 1-1 pitch, Carroll slapped the ball to right and Freeman dived under the tag of catcher Rob Bowen.

"I got enough of the pitch to get it into the outfield," Carroll said. "The rest was up to Freeman."

There was a difference of opinion on the call by home plate umpire Ted Barrett.

"I had to go up the line to catch the ball," Bowen said. "But I thought I might have nipped him on the back."

"The ball came in high and he had to come all the way around his body to tag me," Freeman said. "I made enough of an athletic move to get around him and touch the plate before the tag."

San Diego's Woody Williams worked into the sixth inning, allowing five runs and eight hits.

Josh Barfield hit two homers and drove in a career-high four runs for the Padres. The rookie second baseman was 2-for-5 in his first multi-homer game.

Brian Giles had a homer and two RBI and Mike Piazza added three hits, including a two-run homer, for the Padres.

Colorado's Josh Fogg lasted four innings, allowing six runs, nine hits and three home runs. He had been unbeaten in his previous five starts.

Giles made it 1-0 in the first with an RBI single and Barfield's sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the second, gave San Diego a 3-0 lead.

Giles homered into the Colorado bullpen with one out in the third, and in the next inning, Barfield added his second two-run homer.

The first four Rockies reached with hits in the fourth and Helton singled and Torrealba doubled to make it 6-2. Brad Hawpe's sacrifice fly cut it to 6-3.

Piazza hit a two-run homer in the fifth off Tom Martin.

In the sixth, Torrealba was hit by a pitch and on a hit-and-run single by Hawpe, scored from first when Mike Cameron misplayed the ball in center field. Cla Meredith replaced Williams after a walk to Cory Sullivan and Colorado added two runs on a groundout by Carroll and an RBI single by Barmes to make it 8-6.

"What a way to start the series," Hurdle said. "To appear to get run out of our ballpark for five innings and still be able to come back and win is something."

Game Notes
Hawpe made a leaping catch against the wall in right to rob Adrian Gonzalez of a hit. Gonzalez went 0-for-4 and had his 17-game hitting streak snapped. ... Piazza leads all NL catchers with 16 home runs. ... Cameron struck out four times. ... The Rockies are 6-1 in extra inning games.
