MILWAUKEE (AP) -- For Dodgers manager Grady Little, the only thing to discuss was Derek Lowe.
Lowe allowed three hits and an unearned run in eight innings to help the Dodgers beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 on Wednesday night and stop a three-game losing streak."Anything you said about this game outside of talking about Derek Lowe's performance would be secondary," Little said.Matt Kemp scored the tying run and drove in the go-ahead run for Los Angeles, which avoided getting swept in the three-game series. The Dodgers, who trailed in the NL West by 7½ games on July 26, remained one game ahead of second-place San Diego. The Dodgers had gone 16 scoreless innings over three games before Kemp scored on Rafael Furcal's sacrifice fly in the fifth."It was a win we needed to have," said Lowe, who got 20 groundball outs. "We scraped across two, and that was enough."Lowe (14-8) won his fifth straight decision, giving up a double to Geoff Jenkins in the second, a single to Corey Hart in the third and an infield hit to Kevin Mench in the eighth. Lowe was 4-1 with a 1.69 ERA in August and has allowed only six earned runs in his last six outings. Now the Dodgers head to the Mets for a four-game series."Hopefully, this is the momentum we need to go into New York, where we all know where they stand in the division," Lowe said. "They're probably going to win it any day."Lowe said that the Dodgers watched a lot of video of the previous two losses to Milwaukee."Being a sinkerball guy, you normally don't get that many right-handers in the lineup," Lowe said. "So, I think that definitely helped, having them only with two left-handers.
Right-on-right is normally more effective."Brewers manager Ned Yost said Lowe's sinker is what makes him so effective."The bottom falls out of it," Yost said. "It just disappears. You just pound it into the ground."Takashi Saito followed and worked the ninth for his 18th save in 20 chances.Los Angeles, which lost a series to the Brewers for the first time, is 41-20 against Milwaukee.Chris Capuano (11-10) dropped to 1-6 in his last 11 starts, allowing two runs and five hits in eight innings."Cappy just matched up with the wrong guy," Yost said.Milwaukee went ahead in the second when Prince Fielder was hit by a pitch, Bill Hall reached on a forceout and left fielder Andre Ethier misplayed Jenkins' double down the line for an error that allowed Hall to come around.Kemp tripled in the fifth and came home on Furcal's sacrifice fly and then hit an RBI single in the seventh after Russell Martin's
The Brewers have used 20 different starting lineups in their last 21 games, including the last 12 games. ... Lowe won his previous start at Miller Park, on June 8, 2003, when he allowed one run in six innings in Boston's 9-1 victory.
