ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Chone Figgins knew what he needed when he came to the plate in the ninth inning and was determined to get there.

Figgins hit a run-scoring triple in his final at-bat for the final piece of the sixth cycle in Angels history but Michael Young set off a fireworks display by reaching 200 hits for the fourth straight season to help the Texas Rangers beat the Los Angeles 12-6 Saturday night.

"I was going all the way," Figgins said of his strategy in the ninth. "If I could get a ball and drive it, I was going for three."

Young went 3-for-4 to join some exclusive company. Since 1940, only Wade Boggs (seven), Ichiro Suzuki (six), Young and Kirby Puckett (four) have had at least four straight 200-hit seasons.

"It's very humbling to be there with those guys," Young said. "This means I've been healthy and consistent, which are my two goals going into every season. It's difficult to put into words how fortunate I feel. I was really glad to do it at home."

Young reached the 200 plateau with an RBI single in the seventh. The Rangers recognized the feat on the scoreboard after a brief fireworks display, and Young received an ovation from the crowd of 40,196.

"It's an honor to write his name on the lineup card every day," Rangers manager Buck Showalter said. "His substance is his style."

Young was particularly relieved to reach the milestone because the Rangers could finally take down the large banner in the upper deck in right field counting down his hit total.

"Hopefully we can rip that sign down now," Young said with a smile. "I didn't want to make everything about me."

Young Michael Young has 200 hits in four straight seasons and was mostly a second baseman the first year of the streak (2003). He has been primarily a shortstop since and is only the second middle infielder with 200-plus hits in at least four straight seasons. Figgins' cycle was the Angels first since Jeff DaVanon did it on Aug. 25, 2004, against Kansas City. Figgins also singled in a run in the second, homered in the fifth and doubled in the seventh.

"It's good but it feels bad," Figgins said. "It's hard to enjoy this with a loss."

Gary Matthews Jr. made another homer-robbing catch and Mark Teixeira went 4-for-4 with four RBI for Texas.

Figgins led off the fifth with a homer to pull Los Angeles within 6-3. The Angels tried to get closer when Vladimir Guerrero singled with two outs. Garret Anderson followed with a deep drive to right-center but Matthews leaped at the wall and made a spectacular catch.

Matthews has come up with a series of circus catches this season, including an over-the-wall grab on July 1 that denied a home run bid by Houston's Mike Lamb and has become a highlight-reel staple.

"When [Anderson] hit it, I didn't think he got all of it. I thought the ball was going to end up on the warning track," Matthews said. "Then I realized it was going deeper so I had to spin to adjust."

Matthews' teammates have grown used to his standout defense in center.

"He's been doing it all year," Young said. "It's the same story. He definitely deserves a Gold Glove. He can run down any ball hit to the outfield."

Adam Eaton (6-4) gave up four runs and 11 hits in 6 2/3 innings for Texas.

The Angels fell six games behind first-place Oakland in the AL West and 7½ games behind the Minnesota Twins in the AL wild-card race.

"There's not much encouragement you can take from a game you lose 12-6," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "We swung the bats a little better but we need to win ball games. This thing can change in a heartbeat."

Angels starter John Lackey (11-11) lasted only four innings, allowing six runs and 10 hits.

"It just got kind of rolling downhill and I couldn't stop it," Lackey said.

The Rangers jumped on Lackey for a four-run first before he was able to register an out. Carlos Lee hit a run-scoring double, Teixeira and Mark DeRosa added RBI singles, and another run scored when third baseman Maicer Izturis committed a fielding error on Hank Blalock's grounder.

Los Angeles answered in the second on Mike Napoli's run-scoring double and Figgins' RBI single to make it 4-2.

But Texas stretched its lead to 6-2 in the fourth on Teixeira's RBI double and Lee's run-scoring single.

In the seventh, Gerald Laird scored from third on a wild pitch by Chris Bootcheck, Young and Teixeira added RBI singles, and another run scored on Lee's double play to push the Rangers' lead to 12-4.

Game notes

Figgins is the fifth player to hit for the cycle for the Angels. Jim Fregosi did twice (1964, 1968). ... Lackey has lost five of his last six decisions. ... Los Angeles had a season-high five errors, giving them a league-high 116. ... Bootcheck was unable to retire any of the five batters he faced in the seventh, allowing four runs and four hits. ... Joaquin Arias had his first major league hit in his first official major league at-bat for Texas, an eighth-inning pinch-hit single.
