VIERA, Fla. (AP) -- Tim Redding didn't help his chances of earning a spot in the Washington Nationals' rotation.
The right-hander allowed four runs, five hits and two walks in two innings, but Washington rallied to beat the
New York Mets 7-6 in 10 innings Saturday.
"I'm going to be fine," Redding said. "I feel my arm and my pitches are getting better every time I throw. My first two outings obviously don't look real great, and the numbers I'm putting up are very grim, but I'll be fine by the end of the spring."
Redding allowed back-to-back home runs to
Ben Johnson and
David Newhan in the second inning.
In his first outing, Redding lasted for just two outs, giving up three runs on three hits with two walks. His ERA is 23.62.
"I only had a couple of hits coming into today,"
Nook Logan said. "I've got a lot of at-bats and I've seen a lot of pitches, and hopefully this will get me going."
Mets starter
Oliver Perez had a solid outing, allowing one run and three hits with two walks and a strikeout in four innings.
Brian Schneider drove in the only run against Perez with a double in the fourth inning.
Newhan was 3-for-3 with two doubles and his first home run of the spring, and Johnson was 3-for-4 with his second home run.
Shawn Green was 1-for-3 with an RBI double.
Jose Valentin and
Lastings Milledge also homered for the Mets.
Logan had the game-winning hit in the 10th inning for Washington, lining a single to left field off Eddie Camacho. Logan, known for his defense and speed and expected to be the starting center fielder, was batting .167 coming into the game.
Darnell McDonald added a three-run homer in the eighth inning for the Nationals, and
Chris Booker picked up the victory.
The Nationals scored six of their seven runs in the seventh inning or later.
"This was good because both games we had won and every time we had been in a game, everything had been done by the main guys," Nationals manager Manny Acta said. "Today, the guys that came into the game in the second half of it had an input in the game. They made the comeback happen."
