ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- The closer role in Tampa Bay appeared to be Seth McClung's to lose. A few more days like he had Sunday, and he may just do that.
McClung allowed two earned runs on two hits, a walk and a hit batsman in the Devil Rays' 5-3 loss to the
Houston Astros on Sunday.
"Seth didn't have his command of his fastball today and that's what it is," Tampa Bay manager Joe Madden said. "He needs to locate his fastball and his other pitches. Sometimes he is better, sometimes he isn't so good. He has been doing good work and he still has a good demeanor."
McClung started last season as the No. 2 starter in the Devil Rays rotation and went 2-10 in 15 starts, before being sent to the minors.
In Durham, McClung was groomed as a closer. He was called back in early August and converted six-of-seven save opportunities down the stretch.
McClung isn't used to the bullpen, but said he will do anything it takes to make the team.
"It's been a roller-coaster ride a little bit," McClung said.
Madden wants to give McClung every opportunity to be the closer in Tampa Bay.
"For him to be the closer, he just has to get command of his fastball," Madden said. "He's still vying for the job. I haven't decided on anyone yet."
Astros starter
Brian Moehler allowed one hit and a walk in four innings to shut down the Devil Rays, who didn't score until the ninth inning and managed five hits in the game.
Mike Lamb,
Charlton Jimerson,
Humberto Quintero and Mike Rodriguez each had two hits for the Astros.
James Shields started for the Devil Rays and allowed one earned run in four innings to lower his spring training ERA to 1.29.
