TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Mariano Rivera was dominating again.
Rivera worked a scoreless ninth and Kei Igawa threw five effective innings in the
New York Yankees' 5-1 win over the
Philadelphia Phillies on Monday.
Rivera has allowed four hits, including a broken-bat bloop single Monday by
Abraham Nunez, over nine shutout innings overall.
"I'm ready," Rivera said.
Rivera missed 22 games last September with a right forearm strain. With that in mind, Yankees manager Joe Torre said he is "serious" about limiting the closer to one-inning stints.
"Mr. Torre, he knows exactly what he wants," Rivera said. "He told me he's going to try to use me for one inning. I'm OK with it. Like I said, I'm always there. I'm a team player, and he knows it."
Igawa gave up one run, three hits, two walks and had four strikeouts. He threw 49 of 87 pitches for strikes.
"I have a couple of things I need to work on," Igawa said through an interpreter. " I need to work on my change up. I'm working on my style of pitching. I don't know a lot about the hitters in the major leagues. I haven't gotten to that yet. I'm just working on my pitches."
Igawa is a candidate to pitch opening day Apr. 2 against Tampa Bay along with
Carl Pavano, who is considered the frontrunner. Torre may not announce his decision for a few more days.
"They would be the ones that would be physically lined up for it," Torre said. "When we make a decision on opening day, I think you'd like to have experience be part of it, and personality. You certainly want to feel that the pitcher is going to be able to go out there and not let all that affect him. Right now, we're seeing what we have first and then we'll make a decision."
Alex Rodriguez hit a towering three-run homer in the first for the Yankees.
Doug Mientkiewicz drove in two with a fifth-inning double.
Phillies starter Zack Segovia gave up five runs and three hits in 4 2-3 innings.
Jayson Werth had a third-inning RBI single.
Philadelphia first baseman
Ryan Howard's batting average dropped to .218 after he went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.
Rivera has been working on his change up more than usual this spring. He threw two for balls to Werth. He was non-committal about its use during the regular season.
"I don't know," Rivera said. "We'll see."
Yankees right-hander
Jeff Karstens, who left his start after two innings Sunday because of right elbow stiffness, will be shut down for a couple days. Both an MRI and CT scan were normal.
New York general manager Brian Cashman said there was a chance that Karstens might not be placed on the disabled list to start the season.
"We'll have to wait and see how it goes the next few days," Cashman said.
