PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) -- Kyle Davies got off to a slow start and picked it up after that. He's hoping it's enough to earn him a spot in Atlanta's rotation.

Davies walked the first three batters he faced Wednesday, then settled down in the Braves' 8-3 victory over the New York Mets. The right-hander allowed three runs and four hits in five innings, but only one run after the first.

"The first inning was bad," Davies said. "The first three batters of the first inning were bad. It was just rushing.

"I threw some good changeups, but they weren't going to swing at them because I hadn't located my fastball."

Davies finished 3-7 last season with an 8.38 ERA, but pitched well in spring training and was battling Lance Cormier for the fifth spot in the rotation. The 23-year-old didn't walk another batter after his rough start.

"After the first inning, I thought I was throwing pretty good," Davies said. "I need to find that key when I'm in the bullpen instead of having to find it on the mound because you don?t get those pitches back."

Jeff Francoeur hit a grand slam off Mets starter Jon Adkins in the first. Pete Orr went 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Braves.

New York starter Orlando Hernandez pitched a simulated game against Mets minor leaguers on Wednesday and said he felt fine afterward. Manager Willie Randolph said he plans to use Hernandez in the Mets' second game of the season.

"It looks that way right now," he said.

Game notes
Mets LHP Tom Glavine, who spent most of his career with the Braves, begins the season with 290 wins. "He's had a magnificent career, and he doesn't miss starts," Atlanta manager Bobby Cox said. Braves outfielder Ryan Langerhans left the game after being hit by a pitch in the first inning.
