W: G. Meche (1-0)
L: C. Schilling (0-1)
|
• Summary: Gil Meche, the Royals' $55 million offseason pick-up, jumped out of the gates and provided the defense with seven K's and one earned run while Mark Grudzielanek supplied the offense with three RBIs on 3-for-5 hitting in a 7-1 Opening Day win over the Red Sox.
• Figure this: Meche's 7 1/3-inning outing was the longest for a Royals Opening Day pitcher in 19 years. • Unsung hero: Tony Pena Jr. belted two triples, one off Schilling, in his Royals debut. • Elias Says: Pena was the first big leaguer to hit two triples on Opening Day since Tommy Henrich did it in 1950. -- ESPN.com news services |
Royals 7, Red Sox 1
