• Summary: Jarrod Washburn allowed two singles and two solo home runs in seven innings to lead the Mariners to their sixth victory in seven games.
• Turning point: Richie Sexson hit a two-run home run off Javier Vazquez in fourth inning for his fourth home run, a rising liner that had the scoreboard flashing and music blaring even before the ball zoomed over the left-center field fence. • Hero: Ten of Sexson's 11 hits this season have been for extra bases, and he has a team-leading 16 RBIs on those hits. • Figure this: The Mariners remained in second place in the AL West. A modest achievement for May 1, but it's been four years since the Mariners were above third-place this far into a season. -- ESPN.com news services |

Game notes
Vazquez was denied his first 3-0 start since 2000 when he was with Montreal. ... The Mariners were without C Kenji Johjima and RF Jose Guillen. Johjima has back spasms. He is likely to play Wednesday. Jamie Burke got the start for him and doubled in the third. Guillen got the day off because manager Mike Hargrove said he wanted to get Ben Broussard a start.
