• Summary: Travis Hafner's RBI double down the third-base line in the 11th inning scored David Dellucci from first, giving Cleveland a 7-6 victory over the Blue Jays.
• Turning point: Toronto gambled and lost when it dared Hafner to go the other way by overshifting its infield. • Tough day: Cleveland picked up the win, but it was an otherwise tough day for Cleveland. Starting pitcher Jake Westbrook was forced to leave in the second inning with tightness in his abdominal muscle and probably is headed to the disabled list. Earlier in the day, Major League Baseball denied the Indians' protest of Saturday's 7-4 loss to Baltimore, in which the Orioles had a run waved off only to get it back three innings later. • Quotable: "He's a great hitter. He got fooled on the pitch and still cued it down the line. He's one of the top five hitters in the game." -- John Gibbons, Toronto manager, on Hafner -- ESPN.com news services |
Indians 7, Blue Jays 6
Game notes
With Lee due back, the Indians will have to make at least one roster move before Thursday's game. They're likely to send either OF Ben Francisco or Shin Soo-Choo back to Triple-A Buffalo. ... The Indians and Seattle Mariners took part in what they hope will be their final conference call to decide when and where they'll make up the four games they had snowed out last month. "There's been no possibility that hasn't been discussed," Indians general manager Mark Shapiro said. "All scenarios have been presented by each team."
