Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York
|
• Summary: Seattle erased an early five-run deficit and scored eight times in the fifth inning, collecting a season-high 20 hits to hammer the Yankees.
• Turning point: The M's mauled Yankee pitching for eight runs on eight hits in the fifth. Capped by two-run hits from Yuniesky Betancourt and Jose Lopez, every Mariner batted once in the inning. Seattle hadn't scored as many total runs since getting 16 on Sept. 22, 2004.
• Unsung heroes: Jose Guillen, Kenji Johjima, Betancourt and Lopez -- the bottom four batters in the Mariners starting lineup -- combined to go 9-for-18 with 10 RBIs. • Goat: Kei Igawa, whose ERA rocketed to 7.63. He allowed eight runs and nine hits in four-plus innings.
• Quotable: "We just couldn't stop them. Probably 99 percent of the time we score 11 runs, I think we're going to win." • Elias Says: Derek Jeter went 0-for-6 to end his 20-game hitting streak. In the last 50 years only three other players carrying a hitting streak of at least 20 games were hitless in six-or-more at-bats: Mike Vail in 1975 (0-for-7 ended his 23-game streak), Steve Sax in 1986 (0-for-7, 25-game streak) and Bip Roberts in 1994 (0-for-6, 23-game streak). -- ESPN.com news services |
