W: A. Burgos (1-0)
L: R. Dempster (1-2)
|
• Summary: Smoke poured from Lou Piniella's ears as the Mets scored five runs -- all charged to closer Ryan Dempster -- with one out in the bottom of the ninth to send the legions at Shea home extremely happy. The Cubs lost for the sixth time in eight games.
• Turning point: When Dempster entered to pitch the ninth. He failed to command the strike zone (walking two), jawed with the plate ump, surrendered three hits ... even the out he got was a hard liner. Dempster's ERA doubled from 2.33 to 4.66.
• Unsung heroes: Carlos Beltran and David Wright, who pinch-hit in the ninth and contributed to the rally. • Goat: Scott Eyre's on the hook here. Still ahead 5-3, Piniella didn't hesitate to pull Dempster. But on came Eyre, who needed only three pitches to kill the Cubs' chances at holding on for a win. • Elias Says: Coming into the day, Mets skipper Willie Randolph had pinch hit for his eight starting position players only 30 times since the start of the 2006 season, the fewest pinch-hitters for starting position players by any major-league team. -- ESPN.com news services |
