Marlins 8, Devil Rays 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Byung-Hyun Kim took advantage of some early offensive support.

Kim won his Marlins debut and Aaron Boone hit a grand slam, leading Florida past the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 8-4 on Friday night.

"He did a nice job," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "Kept them off-balance. Threw a lot of good pitches. He'll get the ball five days from now."

Ty Wigginton, who had two solo homers, and Carlos Pena hit consecutive shots off Kim in the sixth for the Devil Rays, who had won four in a row. Tampa Bay hasn't had a five-game winning streak since August 16-21, 2005.

Boone gave the Marlins a 4-0 lead in the second when he hit his second career grand slam on an 0-1 pitch from Edwin Jackson (0-6). His other grand slam came when he played for Cincinnati on Aug. 21, 1999, against Montreal. It was the Marlins' first grand slam since pitcher Dontrelle Willis hit one last July 7 at the New York Mets.

"It was a good way to start the night," said Boone, who hit a hanging breaking ball an estimated 397 feet to left. "I shouldn't say you concentrate more, but I think you do. You're trying to get a good pitch to hit, and at the same time to be aggressive. A good situation to be in, bases loaded and less than two outs. As a hitter, you can't ask for much more."

Kim (2-2), acquired from Colorado on May 13 for pitcher Jorge Julio, allowed three runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Kim said he felt comfortable.

"The first and second innings, I felt great," Kim said. "A little bit tired [at the end]."

Kim was activated from the 15-day disabled list Thursday after being out since April 16 with a bruised right thumb.

"He threw the ball excellent," Marlins catcher Matt Treanor said. "He went out and did what he wanted to do today. He knows what he's doing out there."

Florida had a chance to take a commanding lead later in the second, but Jackson struck out Miguel Cabrera with the bases loaded and two outs.

The Marlins capitalized in the third, scoring three times for a 7-0 lead after Jackson loaded the bases with three walks. Reggie Abercrombie chased Jackson with a two-out, two-run single. The other run scored on catcher Dioner Navarro's passed ball.

Jackson allowed seven runs, seven hits and three walks and struck out two in 2 2/3 innings. His ERA climbed from 6.82 to 7.78.

"That's the way it's been all year. Take three steps forward and five steps back," Jackson said. "All I can do is work hard for my next start."

Tampa Bay got within 7-1 in the fourth when Delmon Young's two-out grounder off the end of the bat went between the legs of first baseman Jason Wood, who was charged with an error.

Wood had an RBI single one inning later to make it 8-1.

Wigginton's second homer of the game cut the Devil Rays deficit to 8-4 in the eighth. He has five career multihomer games, including two this season.

The Devil Rays loaded the bases with no outs later in the eighth but failed to score again.

"I love the way our guys came back," Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. "It's tough to keep coming back from deficits."

Boone is 3-for-3 this season with the bases loaded. ... Florida claimed outfielder Todd Linden off waivers from San Francisco and designated outfielder John Gall for assignment. ... Tampa Bay outfielder Greg Norton, who had right knee surgery on April 2, made his first start of the season at DH. He went 1-for-2 with two walks. ... Marlins right-hander Henry Owens (right rotator cuff tendinitis) threw off a bullpen mound and could face hitters Tuesday.
