Blue Jays 13, Phillies 2
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Given a chance to start again,
Shaun Marcum is making a strong case to stay in the rotation for good.
Marcum pitched six strong innings,
Matt Stairs hit a grand slam and
Lyle Overbay drove in four runs in Toronto's 13-2 victory over the
Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night.
Overbay hit a three-run shot and tripled and
Troy Glaus also homered for the Blue Jays, who tagged
Jamie Moyer for seven runs.
Making his second start this year after 13 relief appearances, Marcum (2-2) allowed two runs, four hits and struck out six. He ran his hitless streak as a starter to 10 innings, before
Chase Utley homered leading off the bottom of the fifth.
"It's a little different mind-set," Marcum said of making the transition from the bullpen. "But, it's still a matter of pitching. I was just trying to throw strikes and keep them off-balance."
Marcum pitched six hitless innings in a 2-1 loss to Tampa Bay last Sunday. He left that game after 78 pitches because manager John Gibbons didn't want to overextend him. Marcum replaced the injured
Victor Zambrano in Toronto's injury-depleted rotation.
"He'll stay in the rotation," Gibbons said.
Stairs hit his 10th career grand slam during a six-run eighth inning against reliever
Clay Condrey. It was the third home run of the year for Stairs, who went 3-for-5.
Moyer (4-3) allowed eight hits in 3 1/3 innings in his second consecutive subpar outing and his worst start since joining the Phillies last August. It was his shortest stint since lasting 2 1/3 innings against the
New York Yankees on May 11, 2005.
The 44-year-old left-hander had pitched at least six innings in each of his first eight starts this season and 15 of 16 after coming to Philadelphia from Seattle. Moyer's ERA has risen from 3.00 to 4.37 in his last two starts.
"Everybody gets hit," manager Charlie Manuel said, downplaying Moyer's struggles.
For the second time in three days, the Phillies (21-22) missed a chance to go over .500 for the first time this season.
Moyer pitched out of jams the first two innings, but ran into trouble in the third.
Alex Rios walked to start the inning and scored on Overbay's triple that was misplayed by center fielder
Aaron Rowand.
Vernon Wells followed with an RBI single and Glaus hit a two-run shot to make it 4-0.
John McDonald singled to start the fourth and Marcum walked, a clear sign Moyer was off. After Rios hit a fielder's choice grounder, Overbay drove one into the right-field seats to give the Blue Jays a 7-0 lead.
"Every inning, I was in trouble," Moyer said. "It's not an easy way to pitch."
After Utley connected,
Abraham Nunez had an RBI single for Philadelphia's other run.
Game notes Glaus is hitting .353 (18-for-51) with five homers and 15 RBIs against Moyer. ... The Phillies are 0-3 when their record is even, including a loss on opening day. ... Toronto scored a season-high runs.
