Rockies 3, Diamondbacks 1

PHOENIX (AP) -- Troy Tulowitzki missed a chance to lay down a sacrifice bunt. He didn't miss out on an opportunity to give Colorado the lead.

Tulowitzki hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the top of the ninth inning to help the Rockies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1 on Tuesday night.

Garrett Atkins drew a leadoff walk against Brandon Lyon (3-2) in the ninth and was replaced by pinch-runner Jamey Carroll.

Tulowitzki squared to bunt as Lyon missed the strike zone on his first three pitches. Tulowitzki made contact on the 3-1 pitch but bunted the ball foul before coming back on the 3-2 pitch to hit a line drive just inside the right-field line.

"I had one pitch to bunt and missed it," said Tulowitzki, who was hitless in three at-bats with two strikeouts against Arizona starter Livan Hernandez. "On 3-2 I was looking for a pitch to drive and I got it. I was just looking for one in the strike zone and I got a good swing on it."

Tulowitzki advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Ryan Spilborgh's sacrifice fly to center to make it 3-1.

"He competes so well and has got great drive," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said of Tulowitzki. "You expect that of players up here, but he has a special want to. He never feels he's out of an at-bat, never feels he's out of a play in the field."

Manuel Corpas (1-2) pitched the eighth for the win, allowing one hit and one walk. Brian Fuentes worked the ninth for his 12th save in 13 attempts.

Arizona had only one hit and two baserunners after the fourth inning.

"You have to stay with it all the way through," manager Bob Melvin said. "Our bats went down as the game went on."

The Diamondbacks opened a 1-0 lead in the third when Conor Jackson doubled off the left-center field wall against Josh Fogg, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Mark Reynolds' sacrifice fly to left.

Colorado tied it at 1 in the fifth on consecutive one-out singles by Yorvit Torrealba, Fogg and Willy Taveras.

Fogg allowed one earned run and scattered six hits over six innings. He struck out two and walked four. He left the game with a strained left groin after a seventh-inning sacrifice bunt.

"The third step out of the box I felt it roll over," Fogg said. "As soon as it happened I knew I wasn't going to go out and pitch. Performance-wise I felt good. I'm just not too excited about the injury."

Hernandez gave up one run and nine hits with one walk in eight innings, striking out a season-high eight. Hernandez threw a season-best 125 pitches.

"Every day's coming around and you've got to hit the ball better," Hernandez said. "You've got to keep getting better."

Game notes
Fogg has held the Diamondbacks to three runs -- two earned -- and 13 hits over 13 innings in his past two starts. The right-hander will be re-examined Wednesday before a determination is made about his next scheduled start. ... Hernandez helped his cause defensively, fielding a sacrifice attempt by Fogg to the right of the mound in the third and just nipping Torrealba at second for the force. Hernandez also picked off Todd Helton after a leadoff double in the sixth. ... Arizona leads the majors with 24 sacrifice flies. ... Diamondbacks CF Eric Byrnes stole his team-leading ninth base in the third.
