Marlins 9, Cubs 4

CHICAGO (AP) -- Lou Piniella didn't need too many words to sum up what he saw Tuesday night.

Jeremy Hermida hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the fifth inning and Josh Willingham added a three-run double in the eighth to lead the Florida Marlins to a 9-4 victory over the slumping Chicago Cubs.

Derrek Lee hit a solo homer and pinch-hitter Ryan Theriot added a two-run drive in the seventh for the Cubs, who have lost seven of their last nine.

"That might be our worst game of the year," said Piniella, who will address the team on Wednesday about its recent poor play.

After Piniella addressed the bad baserunning by the Cubs in his pregame meeting with the media, Mark DeRosa got thrown out at third, trying to advance from second on a grounder to shortstop in the second inning and Michael Barrett got picked off at second in the same inning.

"Not a good play," Piniella said on DeRosa's choice to go to third. "Getting picked off second base not a good play."

Dontrelle Willis (7-3) worked seven innings for Florida, allowing four runs and seven hits. Willis, a former Cubs farmhand, struck out two and walked one. He also was a starter on the 2003 championship team that eliminated the Cubs in the playoffs.

"It's turned into a rivalry since 03," Willis said.

Chicago led 2-0 after three innings but the Marlins pushed across two in the fourth and three in the fifth.

Miguel Olivo drove in Willingham with a sacrifice fly and Willis singled in Hermida in the fourth. Hermida hit a drive to right-center off Jason Marquis in the fifth for his third homer of the season.

Chicago loaded the bases with one out in the ninth but Kevin Gregg struck out Cliff Floyd and Lee to earn his sixth save.

"We still had a big lead," Gregg said. "Even though they had guys on base they still had to get a couple of more guys across to get in a bad situation. We just shut it down right there and ended the rally."

Marquis (5-2) allowed five runs, four earned, and eight hits in five innings to get his first loss since April 10. He had won his last five decisions.

"Starting with me, I need to play smarter. It's one thing to play harder, but there is no excuse to play dumber," Barrett said.

Lee broke out of a 5-for-31 slump with a drive off Willis in the first inning. It was Lee's fourth homer of the season. He also doubled in Alfonso Soriano in the third inning to make it 2-0.

"I thought he [Willis] just made two bad pitches," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "Other than that, I think all the hits were ground-ball base hits going through the infield."

Game notes
The Marlins have beat the Cubs six straight times, dating to last season. ... All of Lee's homers this season have come at Wrigley Field. ... Willis allowed his first homer of his career at Wrigley Field in 33 2/3 innings. ... Willis was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
