Brewers 8, Marlins 5

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The Milwaukee Brewers just wouldn't quit, even with two outs.

Ryan Braun, playing his eighth game in the majors, homered, doubled and singled to lead the Brewers, who scored all their runs with two outs in an 8-5 victory over the Florida Marlins on Friday night.

Kevin Mench drove in four runs for Milwaukee with a sacrifice fly and a double with the bases loaded.

"You've got to finish the inning," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "We can't let them linger around."

Brewers manager Ned Yost was happy to see the offense come alive in clutch situations.

"When you're getting those hits, that's when things start to turn around for you a little bit," he said as Milwaukee won consecutive games for the first time since May 20 and 21.

Braun's two-run homer in the fifth traveled 427 feet and landed just above the ivy that grows on the wall in center field. Corey Hart singled before Braun hit the first pitch from Scott Olsen (4-5) for his second home run since his contract was purchased from Triple-A Nashville on May 24. His first home run in the majors was off Justin Germano on May 26, at San Diego.

"I'm happy that it came in a big situation and that it came in a victory," Braun said of his first home run at Miller Park.

The fifth overall pick in the 2005 first-year player draft also doubled and scored in the seventh. He has played third base in all eight starts and benefits from hitting in front of Prince Fielder, who is tied with Alex Rodriguez for the major league home run lead with 19. Fielder hit 13 home runs in May, setting a franchise record for homers in a month.

Jeff Suppan (7-5) allowed four runs and six hits in seven innings. He had lost three of his previous four starts.

The Marlins scored an unearned run off reliever Matt Wise with two outs in the ninth. Alfredo Amezaga walked and scored when Braun threw wide of first on Hanley Ramirez's grounder.

Francisco Cordero relieved Wise to get the final out and earn his major-league leading 20th save in as many chances.

Suppan gave up Dan Uggla's home run in the first and Ramirez's homer in the third, but then settled down until the Marlins scored twice in the seventh to make it 5-4.

"Solo home runs don't beat you unless you give nine or 10 of them," Yost said. "He didn't do that."

Suppan hit Aaron Boone to start the seventh. Amezaga singled to center with one out and advanced to second on center fielder Bill Hall's throw to third. Uggla hit a sacrifice fly and Ramirez followed with a run-scoring single.

Armando Benitez, acquired from San Francisco for Randy Messenger on Thursday, threw a hitless eighth in his first appearance for the Marlins.

"Same guy we've seen hundreds of times," Gonzalez said. "It was good to see him get an inning of work in a Florida Marlins uniform."

The Brewers padded their lead with three runs in the seventh on Mench's double that cleared the bases.

Olsen allowed a two-out single to Braun in the first, but then held the Brewers hitless until the fourth when Milwaukee took the lead with three runs.

"I'm not happy about blowing the lead," Olsen said. "Definitely, it's not something you want to do. A lot of momentum changed in the fourth, fifth, sixth innings."

Braun led off with walk before Johnny Estrada and Hall each singled to load the bases with one out. Mench hit a sacrifice fly. Tony Graffanino doubled home Estrada and Hall, but was thrown out trying to reach third.

Henry Owens took over for Olsen after the Brewers put runners at third and second with two outs in the sixth and retired Hart on a fly to center. It was Owens' first relief appearance since May 8. He had been out with right shoulder rotator cuff tendinitis and was activated off the disabled list Thursday.

Olsen went 5 2/3 innings, allowing five runs and eight hits. As he left the field, he appeared to make a gesture toward the spectators sitting near the Marlins' dugout.

Asked about the incident after the game, Olsen said none of the fans made any rude remarks.

"OK, write what you want," he said. "You know how I am. I don't take losing well."

Brewers 2B Rickie Weeks, who was placed on the 15-day DL Thursday, received a cortisone shot in his sore right wrist after Dr. Don Sheridan confirmed a diagnosis of tendinitis. Weeks flew to Phoenix to see Sheridan who performed wrist surgery on Aug. 15. Sheridan reported the repair was stable. Weeks will not have any baseball activity for several days. ... Benitez wears No. 49, his old uniform number, thanks to RHP Byung-Hyun Kim who switched to No. 38. ... In the fourth inning, rain leaked through the closed Miller Park roof and forced a few fans to vacate their seats in the second level behind home plate.
