Angels 10, Dodgers 4

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Dodgers are glad to be getting away from the Los Angeles Angels.

Howie Kendrick and Orlando Cabrera had three hits each and drove in a combined three runs, helping the Angels win 10-4 Sunday to clinch the second Freeway Series of the season.

The Angels dropped the opening game, then won the final two of the interleague series, giving them a 5-1 record against the Dodgers this season. The Angels have 44 wins, tied with the Boston Red Sox for the most in baseball.

"We're glad they're not in our division, let me just put it that way," Dodgers manager Grady Little said. "They're a good club and they were certainly more than we could handle this weekend.

"We just didn't play good enough. We don't have enough people in the lineup swinging the bats good at the same time and that's what it takes."

After giving up a leadoff homer to start the game, Kelvim Escobar (8-3) settled down and allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings. The right-hander struck out eight and walked two.

"There's still 27 outs to go. You got to keep going," he said about his early mistake. "It doesn't matter if we fall behind right away, we know we can come back."

Randy Wolf (8-5) gave up four runs and seven hits in five innings, walked three and struck out one in losing for the second time in three games. Facing the Angels for the first time in his career, the left-hander equaled his shortest outing of the season. He hasn't lasted seven innings since May 22.

"My fastball was all over the place and I wasn't locating it at all," Wolf said. "When every other pitch pretty much rides off your fastball, it's pretty hard to be effective."

The Angels batted around in the third and took a 4-1 lead as Wolf gave up five hits, including four in a row before the first out.

Kendrick and Cabrera combined to go 6-for-10, with two doubles and three RBI. Cabrera went 10-for-23 in this season's six-game Freeway Series.

"I don't think Howie's hit stride yet," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He's still searching. He's not where he needs to be."

The Angels took a 2-1 lead on RBI singles by Vladimir Guerrero and Robb Quinlan. Kendrick's RBI double down the third-base line made it 3-1 before Mike Napoli's sacrifice fly added another run.

Wolf needed 70 pitches to get through the first three innings, and he didn't record his first strikeout until the fourth -- the only time he retired the side in order.

"You could have put a Little League team up there and they were going to have success the way I was throwing the ball," he said. "They do a good job of capitalizing on mistakes, and I made quite a few in that third inning."

Cabrera's RBI double off Mark Hendrickson extended the Angels' lead to 5-2 in the sixth. They added three runs in the seventh on Kendrick's RBI single and a two-run single by Chone Figgins.

"We like home runs, but for our team, we really like to run the bases," Figgins said. "The more wins we get now, the less you need down the stretch."

Gary Matthews Jr.'s first career inside-the-park homer and Reggie Willits's RBI double kept the Angels ahead 10-3 in the eighth.

Dodgers right fielder James Loney attempted to backhand Matthews' drive to the wall and crashed into an auxiliary scoreboard with an audible thud. He was taken off the field in a cart after a delay of several minutes and waved to fans. The team said Loney bruised his right knee.

"It was one of those balls where you think you could get back to it and catch it," he said. "But the wall just comes up quick on you, and you've got that cement (base) below the plexiglass, and I think I hit my knee on that. I guess more padding wouldn't hurt."

The Dodgers' only lead came on Rafael Furcal's leadoff homer in the first on an 0-2 pitch from Escobar. Nomar Garciaparra's RBI single in the fifth was their only other run.

The Freeway Series attracted 168,000 fans, breaking the Dodgers' record for a three-game series. It topped last year's mark of 166,904, also against the Angels. ... The Angels are 9-3 in interleague play. ... Dodgers C Russell Martin didn't start after complaining of a stiff neck. ... The Angels have won 11 of their last 12 series. ... Dodgers LF Luis Gonzalez and his 9-year-old triplets were on the mound for the ceremonial first pitch on Father's Day, with his son handling the throw. ... Both teams wore blue sweatbands reading `Dad' to support the occasion and raise awareness for early detection of prostate cancer.
