• Summary: Bronson Arroyo threw six-plus strong innings and helped his own cause by belting a solo home run as the Reds ripped the Giants 6-3 on Thursday.
• Chasing Aaron: Barry Bonds, who didn't add any homers to his total of 751 in the game, managed only a lowly single in four at-bats and was left baffled by a steady stream of Arroyo breaking balls.
• Turning point: Ken Griffey Jr. capped Cincinnati's three-run second inning with a two-out, two-run double. He finished with more RBIs (4-2) than Bonds in the three-game series. Arroyo hit his solo shot in the Reds' big inning. • Hero: Arroyo allowed three runs and seven hits with four strikeouts to snap a personal 10-game winless skid. • Quotable: "It was fun. I don't think I want to see him up there five or six times a game, but under the circumstances -- having a lead, really not being in a super pressure situation -- it was fun." -- Arroyo on facing Bonds -- ESPN.com news services |
Reds 6, Giants 3
Game notes
INF Luis Figueroa cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Fresno. He accepted the assignment to the minors. Figueroa was designated for assignment Saturday when the Giants activated outfielder Fred Lewis from the disabled list. ... A riverboat docked outside the ballpark loudly played calliope music for the Giants' first three batters. Plate umpire Gary Darling checked with the Reds' dugout, but was told that the music was coming from outside the ballpark. By the time Bonds came to bat, the riverboat was on its way and the music had stopped.
