Howard's bat, Durbin's arm lead Phils past Padres

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- J.D. Durbin threw his first career shutout, and all the Phillies could talk about was their hitting.

Ryan Howard drove in a pair of runs, Shane Victorino had three RBIs and Philadelphia beat San Diego 9-0 on Saturday, outscoring the Padres 28-7 in taking the final three games of the four-game series.

"We are on a great roll," said Jimmy Rollins, who scored three times. "But that's what happens when you have the type of lineup that we have. We are capable of doing this on a consistent basis."

Howard went 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly and a walk. The reigning NL MVP was 11-for-22 with five home runs, 13 RBIs and 10 walks during the Phillies' road trip. Against San Diego, he was 7-for-10 with two homers, eight RBIs and eight walks.

Philadelphia, the NL's top scoring offense, also leads the league in runs scored on the road, averaging better than five per game. The Phillies pounded out 40 hits in the final three games against San Diego.

"They talked about Citizens Bank Park being a hitter's park," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said of their home stadium. "But you go check and we can hit anywhere. It doesn't matter where we play."

Durbin (2-2) didn't waste the effort -- even if it was a bit unnecessary.

The right-hander, who has bounced through four organizations since spring training, threw his first complete game in just his fourth career start, limiting San Diego to five hits. No runners reached third base until the ninth inning.

Durbin, who has appeared in only 11 major league games, struck out three and walked three. He picked up his first big league win on Tuesday in a 15-3 victory against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

"A complete game shutout, it was an indescribable feeling," Durbin said. "The organization gave me a shot to settle in and worked with me long enough to actually stick in the big leagues."

Durbin started spring training with Minnesota, which released him on March 29. After Arizona claimed him off waivers, he appeared in one game, then was designated for assignment. Boston claimed him on waivers and designated him for assignment the following day.

That's when the Phillies took a chance.

"I'm settling in and having the confidence behind me," Durbin said. "It makes a huge difference."

Peavy (9-5), meanwhile, looks like his confidence is shaken.

The All-Star Game starter allowed four runs and nine hits, and is 0-4 in his last five starts with an ERA of 4.06. He struck out six and walked one.

"People talk about their ballpark," Peavy said, "but they can hit anywhere, anytime."

Rollins got it started with a homer to lead off the third inning, his 19th. After Chase Utley drew a one-out walk, Howard followed with a double down the right-field line. A fan reached over the railing and touched the ball, but the umpiring crew ruled that Utley would have scored if not for the interference, making it 2-0.

Howard singled in his first at-bat to extend his streak of reaching base to seven straight at-bats. He also had three hits and two walks in Saturday night's 12-4 win.

Victorino followed Rollins' leadoff triple in the fifth with an RBI double. After Victorino went to third on a groundout, Howard hit a sacrifice fly.

The Phillies added five runs in the eighth with Victorino driving in a pair with a double and Rowand's two-run single.

But with Durbin on the mound, the only run that mattered was the first.

"He seemed to be a lot more deceptive than we thought," said San Diego's Michael Barrett. "He came out throwing strikes."

Padres manager Bud Black and Barrett were ejected in the fifth inning after Barrett argued with home plate umpire Chris Guccione, who called him out on a third strike. ... The shutout was just the fourth this season for Philadelphia. ... Peavy leads the NL with 136 strikeouts.
