Nationals 8, Giants 6
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) --
Felipe Lopez hit a tiebreaking double in the eighth inning and the
Washington Nationals overcame
Barry Bonds' record-breaking 756th career home run to beat the
San Francisco Giants 8-6 Tuesday night.
Bonds' shot to break his tie with Hank Aaron and take sole possession of baseball's most hallowed record gave the Giants a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning. He drove a 3-2 pitch from
Mike Bacsik over the wall in right-center, making Bacsik his 445th career victim.
The Giants extended the lead to 6-4 on
Randy Winn's run-scoring single in the seventh but the bullpen could not hold the lead and give
Barry Zito the win.
Austin Kearns started the Nationals' four-run rally in the eighth inning with a double off
Jonathan Sanchez.
Kevin Correia (1-6) relieved with runners on first and third and one out and allowed an RBI single to
Nook Logan, a game-tying single to pinch-hitter
Tony Batista and Lopez's double that gave Washington a 7-6 lead.
Ryan Zimmerman added a sacrifice fly to make it a two-run game.
Chris Schroder (1-0) pitched two innings for his first career win.
Chad Cordero, who blew a ninth-inning lead Monday night, got three outs for his 24th save in 32 chances.
Lopez, Kearns and
Brian Schneider all homered for the Nationals, who have won seven of eight games.
Bengie Molina homered and drove in three runs for the Giants, who have lost seven of the last eight games in which Bonds has homered.
Bonds went 3-for-3 with three runs scored before being replaced in the top of the sixth inning to yet another standing ovation from the sellout crowd.
The record came three years to the day after
Greg Maddux won his 300th career game on this same mound in San Francisco, pitching for the
Chicago Cubs at the time.
Zito allowed four runs and six hits in five innings and also drove in his first career run on a groundout in the second inning. He was pitching two days after making his first career relief appearance, tossing one inning on his throw day after
Noah Lowry got hurt Sunday in San Diego.
Bacsik gave up five runs and seven hits in five innings.
