• Summary: Rookie Aaron Laffey outdueled Mark Buehrle for his first major league win. Kelly Shoppach blasted a three-run homer to cap a five-run fourth as the Indians beat the White Sox Thursday night.
• Hero: In his second major-league start, 22-year-old lefty Laffey worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs and five hits. • Goat: Buehrle (9-7) allowed seven runs and eight hits in four-plus innings. • Figure this: The Indians won for just the seventh time in their last 17 games but increased their lead in the AL Central to 1 1/2 games over Detroit. • Quotable: "Knowing I was going to pitch against Buehrle, it was very exciting for me. A guy I've looked up to, being a left-handed starter. We kind of have the same type of games. It was good to get a win against someone of that caliber." -- Laffey -- ESPN.com news services |
Indians 7, White Sox 5
Game notes
Martinez went 3-for-4 with a walk starting as the DH and is now 14-for-41 (.341) in his career against Buehrle. Regular DH Travis Hafner was getting treatment for a sore left knee, an injury he got sliding into second Tuesday night that forced him out of Wednesday night's game. ... Buehrle still needs one win to reach double-figure victories for a seventh straight season. He had gone at least six innings in 21 straight starts before Thursday's start. He is now 8-11 in his career against the Indians.
