DENVER (AP) -- Troy Tulowitzki is beginning to earn a satisfying reputation -- fearless.

Tulowitzki homered and also hit a go-ahead two-run double against Kerry Wood in the sixth inning to lead the Colorado Rockies to a 6-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

Tulowitzki has already homered against some of the biggest names in the game: Roger Clemens, John Smoltz and Roy Oswalt.

"There isn't much that Tulowitzki fears," Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said. "He just wants to play and win and not much of anything else."

The understated 22-year-old shortstop echoed those thoughts.

"Kerry Wood is a good pitcher and so is Roger Clemens and the rest," Tulowitzki said. "I'm more into winning games and the double today helped win a game."

Wood (0-1), who hadn't given up a run in three relief appearances since coming off the DL on Aug. 3, took over for Sean Marshall to start the sixth with the game tied at 3.

Wood walked Geronimo Gil and allowed a pinch-hit double to Ian Stewart before walking Kaz Matsui intentionally to load the bases. Tulowitzki then lined a double off the scoreboard in right to score make it 5-3. Matt Holliday followed with an RBI ground out.

"I got up in a big situation and I like to be in big situations," Tulowitzki said. "I got a fastball up in zone in this one and put a good swing on it."

Wood allowed three runs, two hits and two walks in one inning.

"I didn't locate it today," Wood said. "I would like to locate it better, but it's only my third inning out of the bullpen."

Chicago remained 1 1/2 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central.

"I feel fortunate to be 1 1/2 games out of first place," manager Lou Piniella said. "We've had a rough 20 days. We've had some injuries and hopefully, we get a little healthy at home."

Matt Herges (1-0) worked 2 2-3 scoreless innings of relief for the Rockies, who split the four-game series with the Cubs. Manny Corpas pitched the ninth for his ninth save.

"The pen was big for us in this one, 16-of-17 retired with a walk," Hurdle said. "No one was bigger than Herges, who got out of a jam in the fourth inning with a double play."

Tulowitzki tied the game at 3 in the fifth with his 15th homer of the season, a line drive just inside the foul pole in left off Marshall. Holliday had two hits and an RBI for the Rockies, who salvaged a split of the four-game series.

Colorado's Tim Harikkala, called up from Triple-A on Saturday, made his second career start and first since 1996 with Seattle. He allowed three runs and nine hits in 3 1-3 innings and had his first major league hit and RBI.

Harikkala was designated for assignment after the game.

Marshall went five innings, allowing three runs and six hits and is winless in his last three starts.

Clint Barmes hit an RBI double and Harikkala had a run-scoring single off Marshall's glove in the second inning to give Colorado a 2-0 lead.

The Cubs chased Harikkala with three runs in the fourth inning. Harikkala, making his first major league appearance since June 16, 2005, with Oakland, allowed singles to Mark DeRosa, Mike Fontenot and Jason Kendall to start the inning.

Kendall's single drove in DeRosa, Felix Pie grounded out to first base to score Fontenot and Marshall singled to left on a 1-2 pitch. Herges replaced Harikkala after Theriot's RBI single and got Jacque Jones to hit into a double play.

Game notes
Stewart's double was his first major league hit. ... INF Daryle Ward was activated from the DL and OF Cliff Floyd was placed on the bereavement list. ... Rockies 1B Todd Helton returned to the starting lineup after missing three games with back spasms. ... Harikkala was placed on the 40-man roster and OF Sean Barker was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs and placed on the 60-man DL with a strained left hamstring.
