• Summary: Kenji Johjima hit a tiebreaking RBI single in Seattle's four-run sixth and the Mariners rallied to beat Chicago 7-5 Saturday night, handing the White Sox their season-high seventh straight loss.
• Playoff watch: The Mariners, who moved within two of the AL West-leading Angels with the win, also kept their half-game lead over the New York Yankees in the wild-card race. • Wasted effort: Chicago's Jim Thome went deep twice for his 39th career multihomer game. The White Sox slugger now has 20 homers on the season and 492 in his career. • Figure this: Every starter in the Mariners' lineup had at least one hit except Ichiro Suzuki, who ended his 10-game hitting streak. Suzuki is second in the American League with a .345 batting average. • Quotable: "There's a reason to it -- the way we're playing we should be in last place. We haven't earned anything better than being in last place. Besides just not playing well, we're helping the other team play better against us." -- White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen -- ESPN.com news services |
Mariners 7, White Sox 5
